1717 Possible to snap motor shaft from too large pinion?
 

Hi there,

I'm doing a Hyper 7 speed project and will be running a pretty large pinion.
Is it possible to snap motor shafts from running too large pinions?

I'm running a Neu 1717 with 5mm shaft.
Will be running a 26T or 32T pinion.

5mm shafts rarely break.

Side loads on the shaft normally cause bearing failure.

High RPM's will cause magnets to crack..

Ah ok, that's good to know.

I wouldn't have thought it was possible for the motor to sheer the shaft from sheer torque, but I just wanted to be sure.

Can you explain what a side load is in detail.

If you set the spur/pinion mesh too tight, the shaft tends to "push" against the shaft bearing (especially the front one). Therefore, a constant load on a bearing spinning that fast can cause premature wear.
