Tap and Die set.
 

Does anyone have any sugestions on a brand for a tap and die set.

I have the mack-daddy craftsman set and I hate it. Over half of the times I have needed to use it, I couldnt because it either didnt have the diameter i needed and when it did it didnt have the thread pitch I needed. :whip: Though it does work very well when i can use it. Depending on the frequency you will be using it I would look at harbor freight. Maybe check out some pawnshops? Im sure Mac and Snapon make good sets but thats major $$.

Unfortunately I have never seen a really good tap & die set that was worth the money listed. Finding a complete set that meets all of the needs for our hobby prebably does not exist. I have found some cheap sets that carry most of what we need, but purchsing solid replacements along the way have yielded even better results buying individual taps and/or dies. It will certainly cost more to do it that way, but you can buy much better tools that way as well as pick & choose quality pieces. Good luck wih your quest.

x2 what Jerry said. As you need a particular size, buy that one and buy quality. Odds are half or more of a set will go unused anyway.

There is nothing worse than having a cheap tap bust off in a hole. Screws are hard enough to extract, taps will make you wanna slap Lincpimp.:whistle:

Yea just reading your post makes me want to slap James for the fun of it. It gives me a vision of James looking like Charlie Sheen with a big line of people slapping him one person at a time.

Anyway I have to agree with you. Buying sets look like a good deal and we get all giddie about purchasing them, and they look all cool and shiny. BUT like Harold stated we end up never ever using more than half of the taps & dies. It just makes more sense to purchase a few taps/dies of the sizes you will for sure use, and will more than likely save some money in the long run. I have a half dozen 3mm & 4mm taps & dies. I have a small set that goes from 2mm to 8mm in case should ever need them, but honestly the 3 & 4 mm will pay for themselves. The rest are just candy.

Thanks guys, I know what you mean it looks cool to have the big set,but most of it will not get used. Most of the time I will use the 3 and 4 mm, but I just bought a Losi 8ight-E and that thing is SAE except the motor mount screws.... even my Losi 22 buggy is all metric!!!

Fricken losi. You need SAE and metric to work on an LST.

Like Josh mentioned, not only do you have to match the diameter (3mm, 4mm) but each diameter has multiple thread pitches. Make sure you get the right ones:yes:

What thread pitch do Traxxas 3mm and 4mm hex screws use? I see lots of .5mm and a few .35mm.
