E-maxx Recommendations
 

Hi all,

I tried to find the answers to my questions through a search, and learned a lot in doing so.... still had a few questions though.

I have a mostly stock E-maxx that I'd like to upgrade to brushess. I bash a little bit but enjoy racing a whole lot more. In the next few weeks our local track opens, and going to try to be out there as much as possible to race.

Not a lot of RC people around here... so pretty sure I'll be competing against a mixed bag of T-maxxes, Savages and 1/8th scale buggies / trucks.

My stock Maxx keeps up with my buddies 3.3 Maxx when we race tight tracks, but I can't hold a candle to his speed on the straights.

Would an 8xl motor + 9920 controller be my best bet to level the playing field?

If so... what other items do I need? Not sure what gearing to run either...

Currently I'm running 6 cell GP3300s and 6 cell GP3700s. I'll probably get 7-cell batteries later on down the line.

My Maxx is stock with the exception of upgraded driveline (MIP CVDs all the way around), upgraded steering, RPM arms and titanium hinge pins.

Any ideas?

For racing, 8XL on 14 cells would be great, maybe even a 9XL. Great run times, which is one main factor you need against the nitro breed. Although I'm not sure how quick the 9XL on 14 cells is, but the 8XL runs very well on 14 and should easily keep up.

I had RPM arms but found them to be a tight fit inside the bulkheads. Have you still got stock bulkheads?

You might also want to consider the Gorilla G2 chassis, it makes a big difference to the handling.

My RPM arms aren't here yet, so haven't tried them on the stock bulkheads...

Think there will be a problem?

Also... any comments on how the 8xl fares on 12 cells?

For racing, i would go for a higher turn motor. A 9XL would be pretty good for racing and give great runtimes and allows you to go up to 20+ cells with ease. I would personally get the Quark 125 if you are willing to spend the extra money. There a great controller from what i have heard.

The RPM arms however will flex and allow the cvds to pop out in a bad crash. Thats the only thing I have against them.

What would be the best choice if sticking with 12 or 14 cells?

I have a 7XL on 14 cells.

Previously ran the 9L on 14 but I definitely like the 7XL better!

If I'm not planning on going past 7 or 8 cells, can I use the Quark 80B controller?

If I were to go with the 9920 or one of the Quarks, do I need a UBEC?

The 9xl on 12 cells stock gearing is faster than the stock motors for the kv is different. The 7xl is a fast and powerful motor as well. Do you have the steel idlers in the trans? It will be neceassry for them.

if you are racing what are the heat and final times i run an 8XL which gives me 10-15 minute run time on 16 cells so if your finals are 20 minutes like most ove here hen prhaps the 9XL would be best so the batteries will last you the race

I have a similiar set up - mostly stock with MIP CVD. 12020 with 8xl on 12 cells. I just set it up and it will fly! I haven't raced it against others, but there is simply no comparison to the titans.

I would recommend a strobe slipper (you will need an OFNA 51 tooth spur) and steel idler gear(s). There are two in the transmission (low and high gears). I rarely use low gears becase it just flips the truck over, so I did not put one there.
