Servo lead length
Hello,
Im just wondering if its possible to make my servo leads any shorter to clean up my wiring. Or will it affect the servo? Many thanks |
Not a problem, I do this all the time. Don't have much servos with stock leads anymore.

Just cut 1cm from the plug, and cut the rest to the desired lenght, if you want to have the connection near the plug. (or do likewise near the servo) Then de-insulate all wires, solder them together, don't forget the shrink. I always use small shrink tubing on two of them and bigger shrink over all three. Hope you see what I mean. No big deal, really. |
I do it the same way Dafni does. But, before soldering the wires, I twist them together to make sure that I get the strongest/lowest resistance connection possible.

Is it possible to get a new end with the new metal pieces and just put a new one on it? Just get the new ends and put them on and back in the plastic holder?

It is, I have never seen the ends though and there a pain in ass to solder since there so small as well as if you put to much solder, they are hard to get in the plastic connector.

I think usually they crimp the pins onto the wire (no solder). You could probably buy the pins, but IMO, it would be much easier to use a lead with the connector/pins already on it and solder that on.

Yeah, the ends are crimped on. They use a special pliers-like tool for this. And this tool costs a small fortune.

If you want it to look really clean, you can take the servo apart and desolder the wires from the circuit board. Then cut the wires to shorten them and resolder them back to the board. It's really not that hard. I've done it to several servos, and I'm no soldering expert. You do need to use a very small tip on the soldering iron, though.
