Questions on E tranny
 

I know alot of you here have plenty of experience with the EMaxx transmission. So you should be able to answer my questions.

Does the tranny care in which direction it is spun?? I mean, does it matter if I run it the other way around, or would you flip the diffs instead??

Also, those pins holding the gears on the input shaft look surprisingly feeble to me. Do they hold up, or are they a weakpoint? Ever managed to break them?
Not only would this be a pain to fix in a hurry, but I can imagine the shards or broken pieces of such a pin could do serious damage to the tranny.
Is there a better oprion than this thin pins?

The tranny doen't care which direction it spins. In fact, I have turned the tranny around on several e-maxxes for different reasons. Also, with brushless, you don't have to flip the diffs - just reverse the motor rotation.
For the press pins on the emaxx input shaft - they are surprisingly strong, but I have managed to break a couple over time. I replaced them with HPI press pins (little thicker - drilled out gears and shaft slightly) and haven't had any failures since.

the alum after market input gears have a better assembly to them, though you won't have probs with the pins, the gears are overall weaker than the stock steel.

Yes, I know about the fact that BL´s don´t care in which way they are spun. And it´s great that you can change the direction on the Warriors so easily.

As you might know, the revo diffs are the other way around as on the maxx. (they are flip-able, too) But as I first assembled mine, I went by the exploded view. So I hooked the motor up as usual, and the truck ran the other way. No problem, just switch direction. But then my motor died, and I threw on an EVX/Titan combo, without thinking of the different direction.
Well, I wanted to run it a few laps anyway, so I just reversed polarity on the spot, easiest fix in a rush. (I know brushed motors have a prefered turning direction, but I wanted to drive the truck really bad, was only for one set of packs)

If you would have said the tranny has a prefered direction, I would have flipped the diffs on the new BL, but I´ll leave it as they are, then. I won´t drive it again, until I get the new BL.

These HPI pins, could you get me some, Mike?

Of course I can, Daniel. You can put them on a shelf for a while most likely(you shouldn't need them for a while), but I will pick you up a bag for your next order. Brushed motors only have a preferred rotation direction due to timing. If you reverse the timing, a brushed motor will prefer running in reverse (although the titans have fixed timing, so there is nothing you can do about these).

I have lots of shelf space:) And I like to have spare parts at hand.


I think brushed motors with a construction like the Titans DO have a prefered direction. Because of the alighnment of the brushes (coals, as we call it) on the com. Looks like this: /o/ See what I mean?? Have a close look if you have a chance.

I might be completly wrong, but that makes sense to me. It´s the same on big non-rc brushers.

The titans and similar non adjustable motors do have a preferred direction and most have some timing advance. Motors with adjustable timing, however, can be reversed.

I broke the pin that goes through the gear to hold it to the shaft. They are fairly strong, as long as it does not more. Mine came out a little bit, almost carved a complete hole line in the top of the tranny. It went flying once it totally broke, no holes in the tranny, but i never found it..

Anyways its pretty strong, i remeber when i broke it, it was the 1ST gear that i broke, i had it at full RPM's spinnig then i shifted it into 2nd, man did that thing ever fly.

i have snaped several of those roll pins. finally i drove an allen wrench in and cut the end off. that has held up ever since.

Why would you flip the tranny? I was looking at it tonight and think I could get more weight up front...Im running a torpedo chassis..anyway..do you sell any mounting devices for the 9918? I've already spend so much money on this thing..its just dumb to make something homemade???

BTW..the 9918 and 9L are perfect..everything went fine..I have not oped it up yet on the road but how are the brakes? Is it hard on the motor when the brakes are applied from full speed?

Widemouth, check the pics of my Revoxx, BL Revo thread, page2. On the big pic you can see how I mounted the 9918. It is held in place by 2 zip-ties and a strip of velcro, btw.
The mount is fully home-grown;)

One reason to flip the tranny is to allow shorter wires between the motor and controller. I mount the controller on the rear upper deck (g-maxx chassis). If the rear of the motor faces the rea of the truck, the wires can be very short. Also, the e-maxx tends to be nose heavy, so I don't recommend moving any more weight to the front of the truck. I also mount my controllers with velcro and zip ties - no fancy mounts here. Braking does put stress on the controllers, but as long as you aren't overgeared, they will work fine. I have heard of two cases so far of brake fade, both with relatively high gearing.
