C Rating for the Orion/Peak 4800 Lipos?

Anyone know the C rating for these lipos? I cant seem to find it documented anywhere?

I like the way they have a hard case and the 3.5mm plugs built in. They seem easy to use and more durable than the typical shrink wrapped Lipo pack.

Only concern is the discharge rate. I'm thinking they will need to be pretty high discharge rate for them to be usefull in a brushless monster truck.

In case you didn't read it, the plugs are 4mm. Just don't want you to order the wrong thing!

Thanks for the heads up metalman. I'm ot ordering them I want something at least 90A constant capable. I like the casing though. hopefully they come out with some more higher capacity or higher c versions in the future.

Why 90amps cont.? That's a bit overkill IMO. I could understand 90amp. burst, though.

When I tested my setup using a Watts Up meter, it showed a peak of 115A. The ESC instuctions say that in order to use the Lipo High mode the batteries should be at least capable of 150% of constant current. I by measuring the amount of mah put out over a 3 minute period, I am calulating it to be around 60-65A continuous when I run it hard. This is where I came up w/ 90A.

You could go with something lower. I've run a battery (4s 5400mah 8C) that's rated at 43amps to 100amps in spikes. The Team Orion/Peak Lipo should be fine.

As far as average draw goes, you'll find that it might be between 20-35amps depending on the setup. But there will be large spikes, like the 115amps that you recorded. That's how these cars operate for the most part, there is no continuous current draw.

I get what you are saying. I just took an average amp draw by measuring the mah used over a timed run and did the math to calculate the average amp draw. You are right, this is not a conntinuous draw, but if i am averaging 60-65Apms and peaking as high as 115A, wouldnt that really be pushing the limits of a 72 A battery?

I would love to get one of those really nice data recorders, but all I have is a Watts Up meter. It records Peak Amps, mah used, peak low voltage, and peak watts. So I am working with what I have. Average Amps is the best measurement I can make.

If you are actually averaging 60-65amps, then there is something grossly wrong... My guess is that the Watts Up might not be suitable for detecting the quick amp spikes of a RC car, and so is displaying incorrect information.
As long as the battery isn't heating up above 140 deg., then it should be fine.

Very possible. I know I'm trying to measure something that the equipment I'm using isn't meant to do. I just timed the run and did divided it by the mah the meter said passed through it. I could have calculated wrong as well I just did it on scratch paper in the field. So you are probably correct that the 60A average is wrong, either by equipment or calculation on my part. Either way. I am sure that it was spiking to 115. I know the meter is at least good for that.

Anyway, the batts I'm using now are not having any heat issues. Just slightly warm to the touch. No where near hot. They are supposed to be 96A constant though. But based On the price I paid, they probably aren't even that good.

So. That brings a question to mind. What is normal (I know... define normal) discharge capability needed for a relatively heavy brushless truck like the ones being built on this site. What would be a safe number for discharge rating on battery. Not in C, but in amps.

I am running a 5C 8000mah setup now, But Id like a smaller mah set of batteries for a lighter setup. Now with the truck totally loaded w/ batteries its just a shade over 11 1bs. I want to put it on a diet and those jumbo batteries are great for long bashing session, but really are overkill most of the time.

What I am trying to find is something lighter maybe around 4000mah 5s (3s pack + 2s pack) that will have enough discharge capacity to handle some hard running. I'm planning on heading out to the local track in the near future and trying my hand at racing. I never have before, but I know that these fat packs I have will not help me. So im looking for a lighter setup that will handle the discarge and hopefully not break the bank to badly either.

What's your limit on budget? Mike sells some 3700mah packs that use cells that work well. These cells are the same ones that other companies (over)rate at 20C, but Apache (smartly) rated them at 15C. These are very capable cells (any comments about Flightpower cells apply to these).

3700 x 15C =55A Is that enough?

Also, would that get me through a 10 min race? How about a 15?

No real limit... Just don't want to go out and pay $400 for batterie right now. If its the only option I might consider it. But I would probably hold off a little while longer if I have t pa that much.

Edit... I checked them out just now. I could probably do a set of a 3s and a 2s pack. Wire them up in series for a 3700 5s setup. Or were you thinking I needed (2) 5s Packs wired in parallel? That would be a little pricey for me.
