1/8th buggy conversion
One of my buddies just bought a new Kanai buggy roller and was thinking about putting an OS .21 VZ-B in it. But I am trying to talk him into doing an electric conversion instead of running nitro.
What BL motor and ESC combo would be the best to use for this application? How many cells should he run? He races at a local dirt oval track and is looking for a combo that would be more powerful then the OS VZ-B? What do you suggest? |
How long are the mains?

Can he run lipo at his track?

And what's his budget? There are so many choices for motor/ESC/battery, but for the most part the setup can be determined by cost.

Yea he can run lipo. He's already running a XXX-4 with a GTB 4.5 and Orion lipo's already. With that setup he usually runs with 1/8 gas buggies anyway.
As for budget, thats not too big of an issue. That OS motor he wants is 300 bucks, so I would say 300-500 dollars would be reasonable. Maybe a little bit more. He is power hungry like me, so what would be the ultimate setup for him. |
For 4s Lipo, he could go with a Lehner 1940 6t or 7t. For 5s Lipo, the 1940 8t would work well. If he truly is power hungry, then 6s Lipo with a 1940 10t. For a controller, the Quark 125 Monster would probably be the best out right now. This setup without batteries would run him $565, but is top-of-the-line. Depending on the actual batteries, $200-250 is a good target price range for Lipos.
It's possible that a 1940 would just be too much. If that's the case the 1930 motors in similar KVs would work well. In order from 4s-6s Lipo, they would be the 1930 8/9t, 11t, 13t. |
how about a hacker/fiego/nemisis 9L on 4s lipo, that is the route i am going with an Ofna 9.5 pro.

I showed him that "top of the line" combo you suggested at work today. He likes that and might buy it. Will 2 Orion 4800 Lipo's (14.8v) supply enough power for that 1940 motor? About what would the runtimes be?
If that motor is too much for those batteries, what else would be a good choice? Also, does anybody make a 1/8th scale buggy conversion kit to do this? If not, what parts would I need? I know I will need a motor mount plate and some 32p pinions, but is there anything I'm not thinking of? |
The Orion batteries should supply the power just fine. My guess for runtime would be about 15mins.
There isn't really a "conversion" out there. All you need is a motor mount, battery mounts, and if there's a steel spur gear, a plastic spur gear (or a hardened steel pinion gear). 32p gears aren't normal for 1/8 buggies, they use mod1 gears. |
oh ok thanks. I could have sworn I saw conversion kits somewhere before. I also thought they run 32p gears. Now I know.
I have use AE battery cups before, so that won't be a problem. I will just see what it takes to secure the batteries properly. Any ideas on a good motor mount to use? Or where to get the right pinions? |
