Revenge of the humble RC10
I got this all original RC10 gold tub a few months ago and so far, I've only driven it once to see what work it needed to be done.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC03511.jpg After the 10 minutes of driving, I could tell it needed work in a couple areas. First off, the drive train is extremely inefficient. The bushings and belt-drive tranny with the strange ball-clutch integrated with the 32 pitch spur may have been great back in the day, but then again nicd's and AM radio's were cutting edge technology. Another thing that I noticed was the enormous amount of slop the steering has. It has a good 1/4" of play each way when you hold the servo horn and turn the wheels with your hand. One more thing that needed to be changed was the 1/4" axles to accommodate dish-style racing wheels. Here's some pics next to my FT B4 just to get an idea of how far we've come: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC03505.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC03507.jpg I wanted to keep this as close to original as possible while still changing some things to make it perform and look better. First, 3/16" axles require different bearings than the stock units and then you need new hubs for the bearings. My solution: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04676.jpg HG Precision aluminum T3 hubs, T3 axles and bearings. Next, freeing up of the drive train. Instead of converting the clunky oversized original tranny to stealth specs, I opted for a slightly used B4 stealth tranny. As you can see, it takes up much less space in addition to being smoother and lighter than the stock tranny: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04677.jpg Now, to make the stealth fit. I had to shave down some unused mounting points to allow it to be closer to the shock tower and to lower it, I had to drill a hole in the mounting plate: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04678.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04681.jpg Had to cut the motor plate a little to allow for clearance of the motor protector on the back of the car. And this is it all put together: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04684.jpg I have a few more things on the way for it, so here's a teaser pic for now: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04687.jpg This car will mainly be used for owning newbies on the track and bombing across the dunes at the local places. its good to see you have the manual too...it strange how a tlt manual looks soooo similar!!! :027: :027: nice work dude....very cool! |
CAMEL that gold rc 10 would be worth a small fortone if you leave it in it's original condition.
|
True, I've been known to have my share of sleepers.
RCH: As I've said before, it is not how much a car is worth but what that car is capable of being. Shelf queens are lame. Beat your truck or play with legos! Updated pics: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04705.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04707.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...b/DSC04710.jpg |
Camel please dont think im insulting you or anything like that. It's just the original rc10's are almost imposible to find in that condition. It looks brand new.
P.S. it looks AWSOME i love that body. |
LoL i love that thing! a blast from the past, now what motor are you running in there camel?
are those max rims and tires or 1/10 stadium truck? |
Camel, the ball clutch is actually a ball diff, thats how it was mounted then.
Great project, I have a project i'm working on similar to this except its a stampede with the bulkhead trannt and shocktower from a traxxas eagle/blue eagle |
paddles!! cool...btw, who makes that shell?
|
Camel, have you thought about dying all that plastic another color?
|
If not dying them, maybe at least putting them in some hot water to rehydrate the nylon. When nylon gets old, it loses alot of the water that was in it when it was new and it gets much more brittle. I have to imagine that getting parts for that thing while probably posible, would be hard to find and expensive.
If you boil the nylon pars for 15 minutes or so you will put the water back in them and make them alot tougher and less likely to break. |
So many replies!
Those are PL Sand Paw paddle tires mounted on RPM revolver wheels for traxxas rear and in the front, the fronts are Panther razor 10 tires mounted on RPM revolver wheels for Associated front. I'll probably be putting some sort of BL in here but for now I think I will run a brushed setup, a 19 maybe? |
