9L in rustler
Hey guys my e-maxx is MIA till I get some Ilder gears. So would it be possible to put the 9L in the rusty?
What performance should I expect out of it? |
It is a little heavy and large for the rustler. Not to mention a little slow. With enough cells, you could strip the tranny in the rustler while you are waiting for your e-maxx tranny parts!
|
Alright i'll just clean the e-maxx and wait i guess :P
|
If you do the rusty - volt it to the moon and take some vid - would be cool to see....:)

Yea I don't like the trany exploding part.
A bunch of friends are getting together today. should have 7 trucks we'll have some great videos up later |
Tie a couple of monster trucks together - Have a pull contest - That would be wild -

I made a quick vid clip some time ago with a 9918/9L in my Rusty .. The stock idler was gone soon after this clip was taken. It shows my E-maxx for a bit, then the Rusty for a bit. Enjoy .... :-) Video So, if the 9L isn't a good idea for the Rusty, what would be a better motor to run with my 9918 controller? Thanks! Brian |
I used to do speed runs with an 8L in my Rustler on 12cells. It did go fast, but because of the 5mm shaft I wasn't really able to gear it properly.
Brian - you can run an 8S, on 7-8 cells it will glow. |

So far I've only tried 16/60 and it had insane power until a concrete curb jumped out in front of it! (broken: front a-arm, rear slider, and tranny casing where the right rear a-arm attaches.) Until I pick up the 8s, what do you think would be a good spur/pinion combo for the 9L in my Rusty? Actually, what would be a good gear combo for the 8s while I'm at it? Should I stick with the 32P, or go back to 48p? (I need to figure out if I need to order more gear-sets when I order the 8s.) Thanks again for your help! Brian |
The 32 pitch pinions/spurs are much tougher than the 48 pitch, so I say keep this mod in place. I would stick with the 16/60 for the 9L, but the 8s would be better off with the 12 tooth pinion.

Right on. Thanks for your help, Mike!
I've had a ton of fun with this 9L in there. I actually geared it down to 12/60 just to try it out, and I've varied cell counts between 6,7,12,13, and 14 to see the difference. It's pretty amazing what this thing will do. So, what will the difference be with the 8s? Will I end up with a higher top end or more starting torque? Will it just run cooler and more effecient but have similar performance? I'm trying to figure out if I should keep what I have or justify getting the 8s. many thanks again! Brian |
If you have found the performance that makes you happy, stick with it. The 8s is a faster motor, with less torque. With the proper gearing, the 8s can be faster on the low cell counts(well, quicker at least). The 8s also weighs quite a bit less than the 9L, and won't hang out in harms way off the tranny.

Thanks again for your fantastic customer service!
I think I'm gonna have to give the 8s a shot. It sounds like it'll help me save a lot of weight with the smaller motor and less cells on board. Gooooood stuff! |
