MGM Controller, brakes sometimes.

I have 2 MGM 24160s... Both of them do the same thing...
Sometimes when I let go of the throttle, the ESC slows the motor down... and that's really killing my pinions... and spur gears... I've tried program every single paramater... anyone have the same problem?... I've tried it n my 3pk and and a plane fm radio with only throttle trim and steering trim... Are the controllers suppose to be like this?

Yes and no. Clear as mud? :)

This is a problem that is supposed to be fixed but apparently they are having trouble with the gremlins. I don't see why they can't get it fixed.

Some say theirs doesn't do it, but by far the majority have the issue. Mine does.

Only cure is to learn never to lift off the throttle slowly. Always lift quickly to neutral and it shouldn't do it.

I think the newer update for the esc supposed to help it out. How old are the escs?

aqwut 08.30.2006 08:31 AM

I think version 2.3.... I bought one from Mike, and one from Icare-RC.... both are the same... I thought it was only me that had this problem... anyways.. it's still a good esc... but the quark is smooth has silK? when I used an air plane esc for my MT, that's what I had to do... let the throttle go down slowly... it's kind of a pain in the *ss if you're doin' jumps and racing....

I wonder if there's anything you can do to help this on the radio?... I have a 3pk

How did you programmed it?

aqwut 08.30.2006 01:53 PM

I tried enabling ABS, but it helped a little bit... Don't you use the MGM?.. I was reading something about the esc controlling the motor to match the escs rpm... I have this option disabled but it still slows the motor down.. it really kills the gears and spins my truck around when it does this. especially with that big motor...

It sounds like you need to send them for the software updates.
I have version 2.31 on mine so i'm going to send it for the update.
The problem i have is not when lifting off (i have drag brake off,and freewheel on).The problem is it brakes when you blip the throttle/apply a light throttle whilst coasting. It seems to try to reduce the motor RPMs to the level of the throttle input,so if you apply a light throttle it will brake violently.
If you set the range of throttle neutral zone high it helps.I use a one-way bearing to get around the problem in the mean time,it's the only way it can be used with a lehner motor.

yeah... when I full throttle then go to neutral right away.. its good.. but if it coasts faster than my next throttling position... that's when it sucks... I was thinking of a one way bearing .. but I wouldn't have any brakes... So if I do a Center Diff, then atleast I can use Mechanical brakes...

I'm sending mine to MGM,i'm in europe so it shouldn't take long.
They told me the update will solve the problem as has Mike,MGM said it was only a problem for certain motors.
If you have two,i'd send one away for the update and use the other in the mean time with the range of neutral zone at the highest setting, and maybe some throttle deadband on the transmitter,it reduces the effect greatly (since it's not braking the motor to such a low speed).
Downside being the large deadband on the throttle which is more on/off so you don't have fine throttle control, not ideal when you have a 2280.
i.e 1/4 throttle will be about the lowest.

Hey Gustav, is the update free?... I'd rather send it for updates instead of killing 15 dollar pinions every hour... but I'm gonna wait untill I do the Center Diff conversion. I already have 2 ESC to send back.. 18.129 and an AstroFlight 45Amp

Serum 08.31.2006 11:03 AM

What is wrong with the 18.129?

aqwut 08.31.2006 11:28 AM

one of the fets where burnt first day it came back from warranty... it was sent 3 times already... .. now goin' on it's fourth plane ride... just one little fet.. too bad they can't fix it locally..
