Need recommendation for brushless combo
I want to spend about $500 max for motor and ESC and run 16cells. Don't want to ship overseas for repair. I already have Goirillamaxx chassis, motor mount, and single speed tranny (UE idler), RR slipper, MIP CVDs, RPM knuckles. Still shopping for diff's. What's the best motor/ESC combo for performance, reliability, clean and easy installation? Running Titans now w/7cell Maxamps - I need more speed and accel! Help!

Ok, I would recommend the Quark 125 and a Neu 1515 1y/F. It will be more like 560, but it will be the best setup you can get pretty much...As for diffs, I would go for the HB Lightning diffs and the FLM Hybrid bulkheads.

I'm close to being able to recomend a Neu/mamba max combo. It's still not really proven yet but it's looking very promising. That combo is only $415
I have a couple bugs to work out (and a little torture testing) in mine but I love it so far. :D I may have a brand new 125b for sale... whenever Quark sends me the one I have been waiting for the last month or so. :) nothing but good things to say about the neu motors, except for the "hole-y" can. |
The Mamba Max says 12 cells max. With quality batteries, what kinda top end will I get from this with the Neu 1515 1y/F? You mentioned long wait time for Quark. Is this typical? I'd rather buy too much ESC than too much motor, so maybe the 125B with a different motor?

You might find the 125s in stock in stores, but Quark (HackerUSA) distributor is out right now... waiting for shipment from SkyTech. They say a couple more weeks.
I'm getting it from them because they owe me credit from a returned $200 hacker item. Hacker doesn't have anything I want so they are letting me put it toward a Quark product... pretty cool. I've never had a Quark so I can't compare it to the MM... the 125 is pretty proven with a fan or sinks added so you can't go wrong there. It sounds like a really nice controller. |
What about the MGM Compro 160? Seems to have all the goods. Is it solid? Any thoughts on quality of tech support and service?

Thats a good ESC. I would choose a Quark first though.

I agree. Been doing a little research and the Quark is solid. Now for the motor. $280 for the ESC means about $200 left for motor (figure $20 to ship everything). So it looks like a Lehner Basic or a Feigao. Are the Lehner and Neu really that much better than the Feigao to command the premium price?

Lehner is lightyears ahead of a feigao, but still has a 1/8th inch shaft which is a no no on a big truck. (Lehner does make basic's with a 5mm shaft, but seem to be nonexistant) For $200 you can still get a good motor, such as a Kontronik or Plettenberg Maxximum. But if its a matter of $20 and you want a Neu, get one.
As far as the brushless hierachy, it goes Feigao-Wanderer-Kontronik-Hacker-Lehner-Plettenberg-Neu. Keep in mind thats really general, specific models of each are very nice. So far Lehner and Neu have the coolest ones though |
How about the Quark 125 with the Lehner Basic XL2000? I plan to run 14-16 cells. What will I get for top-end with my set-up? Is 72 spur good for this?

Forgive my ignorance - I'm new and learning, but what's the problem with the 1/8" shaft?

There weak for one thing...But...The LMT 19 series don't have 1/8th inch shafts. Go with a Neu motor...Well worth it and Mike only charges like 5 bucks to ship (to US). I wouldn't get a Lehner XL. They will heat up. The Neu or Feigao XL is the way to go...

Maybe I'll have to stretch the budget a bit. Okay - Gmaxx with 14 cells, 3.2 bowties. Probably about stock weight. Give me an estimate on top-end with Quark, Neu 1515 1.5 and proper gearing. I plan to race this, so I need to gear it for longer runs. I still need the diffs. Anything else I'm missing? How about mounting this? Gorillamaxx mount is on order. Will I need to beef this up?

The stats say 2700rpm/volt for the 1.5D. This should haul!

"proper" gearing is lets say subjective, :) It has the ability to push 60mph imo but of course you won't gear it that way for racing.
I would gear for about 30-35 top end for a small to medium size track and maybe a bit higher for a large track. My truck (and RC Mike's) is geared for low 30's. My motor is the 1700kv 1515 so my gearing is different... but a rough conversion estimate tells me you should gear for a final drive ratio of 22:1 for a 30mph top end. That's a good start imo... as it agrees with the math from mike's and mine. Both trucks run 30ish mph on 4s lipo. (14 cells should be similar) mine: 1700kv and 14:1 (1700/14=121.4) mike: 2200kv and 18:1 (2200/18=122.2) yours: 2700kv and 22:1 (2700/22=122.7) I'm curious to see what temps you get. I think mikes setup is better than mine based on the lower motor temps he is getting. I'm going to gear up just a little and see if the temps go up or down. |
