Brushless E-maxx decisions

If you guys remember me, I'm the one that had the extended (plastic) chassis Pede with a Lehner 5300 and Mtronik's Genesis Pro ESC.

Well anyway, now I have an E-maxx and I extended the stock chassis using the same method as before. I extended it 1.75 in. so it will now hold 2 8 cell flat packs on it. I'm definately wanting a nice Brushless setup for it, but I don't want anything to insane. What motor would you suggest to normally run off 12-14 cells with the occasional 16 thrown at it? I am wanting a good medium between performance and runtime. Also what is a good economical ESC to control it? And what other parts would I need?

I'm thinking about the Fiegao C 9 XL or 10 XL but I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I will have to regear and add a BEC and maybe heatsinks also.

This is just going to be a fun little bash truck for me, so help me out if you don't care. I know people come on here and keep asking the same questions over and over, but I actually did search. The only problem was I found so many different opinions I was just as lost as when I started.

I've only had this truck for about a week now, but there will be alot more mods to come. Here's a couple pics of it.

I would choose a Mamba Max ESC, UBEC, Feigao C XL or Neu 1515. As for drivetrain upgrades, I would go for 3.3 stuff...

The Mamba ESC won't handle the amount of cells I'm wanting to run.

Here's some more pics of it.

The only thing I still need to do is make new battery straps. I thought about just using a couple velcro Gorillamaxx straps that I've got lying around, but I want it to look as close to stock as possible.

If you can't tell in those pics, I cut the very end off the stock chassis. Then I cut the new stock chassis farther in so it still had slots to hold 2 cells. I used a 2 part epoxy plastic welding system to bond them back together and I made a plastic support plate to go directly underneath the chassis seam. Then I cut and bonded the support brackets. I made sure to stagar my cuts to regain as much strenght as possible. Also the RPM skid plate reaches the front piece of the support bracket and has 2 bolts that go all the way to the transmission to help hold everything together. I would put money on it that this setup is stronger then stock. I put it throught is paces today (well, for stock motors atleast) and had zero trouble.

It actually can handle 14 or 16 cells. A CC rep told Jhautz its even ok to run 5S LiPo on it...I plan on running one on 4S or 5S in a Revo.

I've ran mine with 14 to 16 cells and ubec/8XL w/ no prob, but its obviously not under warr.

Runs great, just don't too hot a motor, gear properly and be prepared for a small fan in the summer if it needs it. Mine stays v cool w/ a 25mm fan. Under 130F in ~90* back in Aug.

If you don't mind the non-stock look and are looking for an inexpensive alternative to GMaxx straps, regular velcro strips work very well, especially the way you have them mounted. Since they are simple, replacing them when they get dirty and/or worn is a piece of cake. They are just strips with the hook on one side and the loop on the other. Just wrap them around the batts and overlap as much as you feel comfortable with.

I use this on my Jato and Revo and they work great.

Why not use the Gorillamaxx CF straps? :D

Nice ext. setup.....very good idea...and original as well

sjcrss 10.29.2006 10:24 PM

good idea squee...i didn't even think of that......I bet they would work great on it....IMO

I thought about trying to make some out of carbon fiber or even black velcro like you guys suggested. I'll figure out something.

I will end up with a Mamba Max system for one of my other rig's, but I don't think I will try that ESC in this thing. I would rather have something that I wouldn't have to worry about at all.

What motor do you guys think would be right for me? 8XL, 9XL, 10XL what? I don't know much about the Neu motors yet, but I have heard good things about them.

Finnster 10.29.2006 11:07 PM

I don't think there is a worry free ESC, they all seem to have their pros/cons..

The Monster Max is rumored to be coming out soon as well, we will see, but its a thought.

A CC rep said that he would be surprised if it was out before the summer...I wouldn't hold my breath...I would choose a Quark if not the MM. The Neu motors are a 4 pole, so if you are gonna run one, you have to have a ESC that can run it. Schulze, Mamba, and Quark are the only ESC's that can run a 4 pole motor that I know of. As for a Feigao motor, I would choose a 8XL or a 9XL for runtime.

Seriously I think you would have to worry more about the drivetrain than the MambaMax. It can dish out more thana Emaxx tranny can handle (unless it's fully modified from the spur to the axles) hee hee

Anyone here think the MM would have any issues at all with a 9-10XL?

But since you really want to push the voltage I would say go with a 125b.

Which reminds me... I have a brand new unopened Quark125b and I'm not sure what to do with it. Sell it now or give it a try? I really would like to run it just for the experience and to compare to the MM but then it's "used" and I won't get much $$ for it.

I also will have a couple brand new Mamba systems for sale soon (haven't even got them yet... don't ask why :) )
