Cooling priority

Which is more important to keep cool, the motor, or the ESC?

I know both are just as important but say if they were both getting to their heat limitations and you have 1 fan, which would you place it on?

With fans, is it best to push the air towards or away from the heat source?

E-Maxx King 11.14.2006 04:24 PM

I would say cool the ESC, and push the air towards it.

Most ESCs have a built-in heat protection. They shut down when they get hot, they thermal. Motors have no heat protection. When you get them too hot, they just demagnetize.

Let the fans blow on stuff, more efficient than just sucking air over it.

Is demagnetize a tempory or permanent issue?

Dafni 11.14.2006 04:37 PM

Unfortunately, this demagnetisation is irreversible, i.e. lethal. Rotor gone.

What was that experiment daf, with the absolute 0 point and magnets?

You showed me some pics/movies once.. Can't remember what it was.

Is it snowing in Switzerland bytheway?

coolhandcountry 11.14.2006 07:29 PM

I would see about changing gearing to see if that helped with heat issues.

Well, there are a lot of interesting effects associated with near zero temps, magnets, and supra-conductors... and quite a bunch of nice experiments. Can't remember exactly what we talked about either.

No, there's no snow in my area yet. The Mini Track is still driveable, and it's better than ever, btw. Weather is cold, but dry. Perfect BL weather.

Nick, sorry for the off topic post.

Off-topic, no worries.

Thanks for the info. Not actually having overheating problems yet, still waiting for my other Lipo pack and bearings for my 8mm CVDs. ;) Just have a spare fan and wonderd where to put it.

It's fffffreeezing during the days anyway so might not be a problem, I bet it's colder in Switz though. :D

Makes me want to jump in my car and do it all over again Daf..
