My final testing on the 9XL/Mamba Max combo
I have been running this setup for a month and am very impressed. I have run it through as much hard work as i could think of and it never shutdown or hiccuped . Today i was running it with an 18/51, on 4s lipo, with an Emaxx transmission/ half trans. conversion, 40 series bowtie/wabash combo. the only cogging i saw was with the 18 tooth pinion and it was slight couldn't get the mamba to stop but stripped a ring gear trying. all i can say is that with all the speed runs, hard pavement running, and start and stop, not to mention a lot of doughnuts (mmmm) the only thing i damaged was a stock ring gear.
I forgot to mention that this setup oversteps the recomendations of castle creations and might void the warranty, I have had no troubles, but needed to mention it If you want to try it, I say its a great combo, so long as you stay with 16 or below tooth pinion (mod-1), its a good racing setup for short to medium tracks (speeds in the mid to upper 20's with 4s lipo's or 12 to 14 cells) I have yet to fully drain the batteries (8000 mah maxamps lipo) and have run over 20 minutes so far at one time. If you want MT power for the price of the mamba max system (212 for the MM combo, MM esc and 9XLis about 220) you need to look into this. you could also use a 7XL and 8XL but you may get more heat and less runtime. you also need a UBEC for power to the reciever and servo, I have run another MM with a 5700 motor on 3s and internal bec with no problems, but it would cut out on 12 cells, so UBEC is a must for this setup. thanks for reading and hope it helps, in making a decision. If you got questions Just ask. |
Well, that's nice to hear.
Now, I think that why my truck stutters like crazy is because I'm using a rediculous pinion size (24T MOD1). I hope it wont over work my controller. |
Mine would cog slightly, if at all but think if i go to a 16 it will be great.
What setup are you running? |
I got some 3s 8000 mah Lipo's for some combinations and for a savage conversion i'm working on. I plan to try 5s on this combo, it probably will not be a constant setup, but mostly for speed runs against Nitro's (40 mph is good and managable for nitro's, but for electrics, I prefer torque and raw acceleration)
|
I'm running a 1950/10 motor, 6s 3700mah lipos and the 149.18 controller.
So far, I haven't seen the full potential of this setup, but I'm just waiting for a few things and I hope that I'll be ready to see some action. |
if this mamba esc can hold up 4s lipo without problems then i just cant immagen gow good the monster maxx wil be!

There is absolutely no reason why the MM can't do 4s. I don't even know why Castle doesn't rate it for 4s. They rate the ESC for 12 cells, which is 14.4v, which is the same as 4s, which 14.8v at the nominal values. Even right off the charger, 4s is the same as 12 cells at 16.8v (4s*4.2v/cell fo Li or 12*~1.4v for NiMH). The only way I can see being out of warranty spec is using larger motors and heavier vehicles than intended. Even then, as long as the timing is set to low and punch control is set to high (meaning: less power on takeoff), the current requirements should be about the same as the MM motors running on high timing and no punch control.
@Crazyjr: You did mention some cogging on the 9XL. Did you by any chance mess around with the tioming and punch control? Those two settings should ease up on the ESC a little and should eliminate the little cogging you had. Just and idea... |
Brian,
Nice update to the calculator! I like it! |

Did you take any temp readings on this?

I was running an 18 tooth pinion and thought i might have it overgeared, I'm going to a 16 and 5s and see how it runs. I will play with the settings and see what it will do. I do wish the V2 slipperential comes soon, wheelies are boring to a racer. The lipo's are amazing, i spent over 3/4 of the charge and got the fastest speed at the end of my run, that was with 2 2s 8000mah maxamps lipo's Hey BrianG, how do you have you 10XL geared on 14 cells |

I'm using standard maxx tires with crimefighters, stock revo diffs, 40T/14T spur/pinion, and 2nd gear locked using the wide ratio 2nd gear. ESC is usually barely warm (I can hold my hand on it forever and I'm sensitive to heat) but the motor is usually quite a bit warmer - around 140-150 degrees. That usually means it's geared too short, but the gearing is actually kinda tall. |
Brian, if the temps you just described are indeed from a 10XL on 14 cells, I'd say your motor temps would be better with a slightly higher KV motor.
Altough 140°F is very good after a full run. |

Cogging, what cogging? :004: |
Dafni: Yeah, I was going to get a 5s pack but couldn't find the ideal Lipo pack at the time. So, I just geared it to the speed I wanted. Now that I have a few 14-cell packs, I just never got around to going with higher voltage (and lowering the gearing a little as well). I get about 13-15 minutes of runtime with GP's so it's not that bad.
MM: Yup, I plan on using 4s. I was also looking at the Quark, but the 1940 is pricey enough. Plus, the MM is so small that it can fit pretty much anywhere. |
