Lipo and Quark questions

I just received my 8000mah batteries from TrueRc... a 3s and 2s. I currently have the superbrain 977 so 3s is the most it can handle which takes eternity to charge. I'm new to lipo and have a few questions...

Is it ok to charge and balance each pack separately and then hook them up in series to the truck?

Will the LVC on the quark work for the 2 pack setup?

Possible but not the best method.

Besides the fact that it would take 2 hours to charge them separate, they need to be balanced = both packs equal in voltage. If you are careful and couble check the voltage you could do that. But as a caution I would not run them down too far... stop and recharge well before they "dump" so you don't risk having one pack go below 3v/cell before the other.

I think the new 989 does 5s... I would upgrade the charger and make life easier.

The LVC will still work.... all it "sees" is the total voltage of the pack which is 5s, regardless of how the pack is wired up or packaged.

I did what you are trying to do for a while untill I upgraded my charger. You just have to make sure both packs are topped off, balanced and show the same voltage per cell when you start. I never had any issues, you just need to pay a little closer attention when chargeing and balancing is all. BTW. I have a few sets of the TrueRC 8000 3s+2s setup and really like them for the $$$. Let us know how they work out for you.

Also with the 977 you can charge both packs at once. It has 2 outputs and they can be used at the same time. The 977 limits the amps youc can charge lipo with to 4 amps on a 3s pack and 3 apms on a 2s pack. But it can handle running at this load on both outputs at the same time. That should cut down you charge time a little.

As GD said, the 989 is a really nice upgrade. You can then charge with a Y adapter and a modifed 5s balanceing tap and charge them at the same time as 5s packs.

I don't exactly understand how to make sure they are both equal in voltage. For example, the 3s (first charge on them) went to 3200mah charge and stopped when the voltage read 12.39. I am using this balancer http://2dogrc.com/ecommerce/os/catal...er-p-1993.html

So you mean just take the voltage reading from charger and divide by 3 cells and make sure this equals the same for 2s voltage per cell?

The girlfriend is getting 989 for me next month :)

Yes just charge them both all the way up and balance them. Then check the voltage. Take the 3s pack and divide by 3 and take the 2s pack voltage and divide by 2. They should be equal within .05V for a well balanced pack.

thank you :)....I will let you guy know how they do, plus I upgraded from 9xl to neu 1515 (1700kv)

Your whole system will run much cooler. Great ugrade. Plus the Neu will feel like it has more low end grunt if you can believe that.:027: Top end will be pretty much the same.

What ESC are you running? Quark I'm asuming...

I have the quark125. I only have 16 and 20 pinion but think 18 will be perfect. I tried the neu on 16 cells gp3300's and can notice the cooler temps and a little bit on low end.

Had a chance to run the lipos for about 5 minutes with the Neu and I am truly amazed. There is so much power and acceleration. I am running 51/20 but going to go down to 51/16 next time.

I forgot to add: How does the LVC work on the quark. Not familiar with these and need to know how welll it works to keep the lipos in tip top condition
