Savage with Truggy-Style Chassis
 

Anyone thought about this? I think Serum has, but I'm not sure. Although it's not released yet, I think Mr. Constructor (on another forum) is making a chassis like what you would see on a truggy (or something like it).

It would be neat if I were to try it out. My Savage is just laying in my garage with some stock TVPs that are about 6in. wide in the middle (they are bent outwards). Since most of my other projects are somewhat extreme, why not make an even more extreme Savage? Basically, I'm looking at replacing the purple aluminum plates (skid plates?) with a chassis. The idea with this chassis will be sort of like a truss bridge, where the chassis plate is like the part of a bridge you would go on, and then there would be vertical supports mounting to the chassis plate and to the bulkheads (where the stock TVPs would mount). The motor would be put on the chassis for a really low CG, and the batteries would also be mounted low (but I'm not sure how low). There would be a center diff and a slipper clutch like I'm using in my Revo ("slipperential"). Overall it should be lighter than most Savage conversions since it wouldn't have the super heavy transmission, although the extra chassis pieces would add some extra weight.

So, what do you guys think?

I thought Serum has one that is using a Fastlane machine TVP with a center diff mounted on the skid plate. This to me is pretty close to a truggy style chassis but without the pan chassis.

I stopped working on it, since is don't like the suspension geometry..

I'll put some love in it later.

Yeah, Mr. Constructor's has a lot of pieces to it.

Serum, what was wrong with the suspension geometry? Is it something I will have to think about?

Yeah, shocks are positioned too far to the wheels to use buggyshocks. it's a PITA to get teh springs/oil right with ofna shocks. i did found something nice though.. inovative RC made a conversion for the LST shocks, which position the shocks better. (you could use buggy shocks with them, i guess)

Is that a general problem with the Savage, or is that a problem with a Savage that uses a truggy-style chassis?

A company called rock concepts makes a set of alumnium shock towers that are shorter to accomodate 1/8 shocks, If i find their site i'll link it

That doesn't address the problem. I designed some nice buggy towers as well, but still the shocks are put too far to the wheels on the lower arms.

I finally pulled the Savage out of the garage and took the TVPs off of it. It looks like I may actually keep the front purple piece that sits above the skidplate, just because I don't want to have to deal with the front kickup while designing a new chassis. So that means that the front of the chassis will be like normal TVPs, but the front TVP section will taper down toward the middle of the chassis. The rear purple piece above the skidplate will be replaced, and the skidplate will be cut down.

Ugh. This will be the most difficult chassis for me, so I might as well start designing it before I hurt myself trying to explain it.

Work has begun. I just finished what is basically re-engineering the front portion of the stock TVPs. It took so long because each hole had to be carefully measured, and this chassis doesn't allow for easy measuring. Anyways, here's a pic:

The upper-right hole is to hold in a support that will connect to the top of the bellcrank posts. I'm ditching the radio box.

I have the holes done for the rear where the TVPs will connect to the bulkhead, but that's it for now.
