mod 1 pinions
 

is there any other mod 1 pinions other then the rcm ones??? 25 bucks for a pinions is WAAAAY to much for me, especially since i like to buy like 10 pinions to find the best gearing:018:

Century brand pinions at Tower are cheap... like $7 I think.

yeh good deal.. i will use those to figure out gearing, and then get one from rcm, and i might need less/more teeth then they offer to so idk

but for 7 bucks imo thats a good deal

It's nice to be able to grab several pinions so you can work with more gearing options. In the past some have spent $100s on pinions alone.

I also have some from Mike... they aren't bad either @ $10, and i have one $25 hardened one.

The cheapies work fine with plasitc spurs.

GD, have you tried that hardened one on a steel spur? If so, how does it hold up?

Nope :) I don't think I want to risk a $25 gear unless I have to. Maybe sometime I'll be stuck with a steel spur so I can try it.

I would think a hardened pinion would hold up ok with the gear mesh right and less-than-insane power and usage. The gear I got from Mike is made from a nitro clutch bell so it should be good.

But after hearing about guys ruining hardened pinions I think it's best to just use plastic spurs.

What tooth is it? Despite the bad stigma with using steel on steel, I still want to try it. I started a thread a while back on this and one part of Mike's response leads me to believe that if the motor is mounted VERY solidly, the combo should work. Maybe use a clamp style mount so it's closer to the chassis for less flex. I really think flex is what causes the issue. That and maybe the lack of a slipper. The only difference between Nitro and BL (torque aside) is the fact that the Nitro has the clutchbell, which is sorta like a slipper.

Maybe if you decide you don't want to use it, I could take it off your hands? No sense in letting it go to waste. :)
