Motor advice please
Hello, I am a new member and have question about brushless motors. I currently have a Hot Bodies Lightning RR I converted to electric. I used a HV maxx 6.5 motor geared 44/12. It ran fine on my matched 3300 cells. I bought the Orion 4800 lipo cells and ran them only to have the controller shut down because the motor got too hot. After cooling off it ran fine.
My question is can I make this setup work or do I need a new motor and speed control? I have already made an adapter to allow the use of the 51 tooth spur gear if that helps. If a new motor and speed control are what is needed would a Feigao 540 7xl motor with a Mamba Maxx controller work? Please advise. I hope to convert a truggy next, a x1-crt or HB lsp and would use the same set up. Thank you for your help. |
if you wanna do a truggy i would suggest a better setup then the hv-maxx.
if you'd like to run your buggy with the 6.5 you should put lsp-r diffs in it. then it will be 43/10. instead of 43/13. |
A 7xl and a MM would be a nice setup in a LSP! BTW welcome to the forums.
Im interested to see how you converted your lsp, if you can, post some pics. |
Sylvester I have not done a LSP as of yet I am trying to decide between a lsp and a x1-crt. By the way I don't know how to post pictures yet.

Id reccomend the LSP-R, but many will reccomend the CRT. They are both amazing truggies, it comes down to personal preference.

XRAy truggy looks sweeeeeetttt!!!! But I don't want to even know what the price is gonna be.
BTW the HV could run a buggy ok I think, but you need to gear it much lower... try 10/46 and see how it runs. Novak REALLY needs to make a lower kv motor. I have tried to tell them but they don't seem to understand. Idiots. ;) |

Can the Novak do 4s? I thought it could... so they should have a <3000kv motor like we all run in 1/8 center diff stuff.
Mabye they just want it limited to emaxxes. |

I'm running a 7XL with a MM in a buggy that I just converted. I've only run it on 3S, so far. Still waiting for the 4S packs to come in. After having run the setup, I'm finding that maybe the 7XL is too low a wind for what I'm doing with the buggy. With a truck, you might want to consider an 8 or even 9XL. Something in the neighborhood of a 2000kv rating and run it on 4S Lipo.
Of course, I've never done this in a truck, but I can tell you that the 7XL is a pretty hot motor. General experience with brushless tells me that in a truck that you are likely going to bash with and abuse, you'll want a higher turn motor for cooler running. Believe me, 35 - 40mph in a truck is plenty fast too. |
I agree... I usually recomend a 9XL (maybe an 8) for a truggy... unless a guy really wants a speed demon.
Hee hee but I have never ran these motors actually... but motors is motors and kv is kv. |
I'm in the same boat as glass doctor in that I've never run the 8xl or 9xl, but I've had a bit of experience in 1/10 scale and with the 7XL. I guess you could say the my recommendation is the result of an extrapolation, but I think it's valid. :)
If I were building a truck or truggy, it definitely wouldn't be with anything hotter than an 8XL. What you really have to consider is the rolling mass of the tires are wheels (and diameter). It's a lot for the motor to contend with, and a higher turn motor is better suited to this. In fact, I'd probably start with a 9XL. That on 4S lipo with the MM esc should make for some worry free fun with good runtimes. |
