New to truggys
 
Hey, my dad and I race with our t4s and xxx-ts( the t4 being mine and the losi being his)But we want something bigger, but not quite emaxx big, just a tad smaller, and I was thinking... ahha! TRUGGY!Soooo im really new to rc only being in it for a couple months and need a couple questions answered if you would.

1.Are most truggys 4wd?
2.Whats a good truggy setup for racing and minimal bashing?
3.what are some basic upgrades for a racing truggy setup?
4. do the truggys have 2 gears like the maxx?
5.whats a slipperential?
6.Anything I should know about truggys being practically brand new to rc?
7.Are they as hard as they look to maintain and learn parts and stuff on them?
8.Sorry for so many questions:002: ,Caine

FYI, most all truggies are larger than an E-Maxx.

1. All truggies are 4wd
2. Personally, I would choose a LSP-R with some good servos, a Picco .27, JP-3 pipe, and some good tires along with a few upgrades.
3. Tires are probably #1. as for anything else, it really depends on the truggy. Let me know if you deside to get the LSP-R and I can post a long ass list of parts that are worth-while upgrades
4. Nope...Center diff
5. A slipperential is a a center diff with a slipper that is made by Mike, the owner of this forum, for the E-Maxx with a Gorillamaxx chassis
6. Not that I can thing of, other than its a pretty competitive class
7. There not hard AT ALL to work on. There probably one of the easiest things to work on...

what exactly does center diff mean? to be quite honest dont shoot me for this I have no idea what a diff is...so if someone could please explain what its purpose is for me please without telling me to jump off a bridge?Are these 4wd cars belt driven or what, how do they get power if only one motor assuming brushless?

The purpose for a differential is to allow wheels to spin at different rates. For example, in a car, when you are turning, the outside wheel will obviously spin less then the inside wheel. The differential is what allows the wheels to do this. There is also a differntial in all rc cars, 2 or 4 wheel drive. Without it, you would be spinning your wheels while turning or strip some gears in the tranny badly. The center diff does the same thing, except it allows the front and rear wheels to spin at different rates.

Your dad can probably explain what a diff does... it's exactly like a real car diff... the "rear end" of a solid axles car/truck.

The center diff in r/c does the same thing except that it's sharing the load betweeen the front and rear tires instead of the left/right.

The diff distributes the power to where it has the least resistance... it you hold the front tires, it will only spin the rears... if the resistance is equal on both, then both will get full power.

To see how it works, think about what happens if the truck tries to do a wheelie... when the front tires would begin to lift off the ground, much of the power will be transfered from the rear tires to the front. For racing, this is a good thing.... it tends to keep all four tires on the dirt. If it does this too much it's a bad thing because there will always be some tires just spinning wihtout traxction. So, we use heavy fluids inside the diffs so it's not so easy for the diff to transfer power... it makes it a limited slip diff. For example, in a full wheelie, the rear will still have some power driving it because the thick fluid in the diff is trying to stop the diff from "working".

differential:
when both wheels ( or axles for the center diff) are on the ground and have equal traction, the diff will devide power equally between the two output shafts. the spider gears will just push the bevel gears.
when one wheel is loose, the spider gears will will start spinning.
that loose wheel will get power, the other will stop turning.
now it comes interesting, viscous diff: there is thick oil inbetween the bevel and spider gears.
that oil has lots of resistance.
keeps the diff from slipping to some degree.
here is a toy diff ( lego)
this one has the minimum number of internal gears.

Hey, I have that part too! I mean, my kid has that part....yeah... Of course, a buggy diff is a wee bit more rugged, but it does help visualize how it works.

Thanks alot all. Should I be opening up my diff and greacing it( with what, some kind of really heavy special stuf?) every few months?

a ball diff has to be cleaned out from time to time. and re-greased.
and for 1/8th scale diffs you will be searcing for the right oil quite often if you go to different tracks.
if you only bash or keep the same weight oil it should last a couple of sessions. then it will collect some metal particles and is best replaced with fresh fluid.:027:
forgot to mention:
ball diff with white silicone grease specially for main diff balls and the trust washer with trust bearing grease.
from losi these are normal withe and for the trust a sort of brown grease.
for asso they are white for the main balls and black for the trust.:p

For the T4 just follow the manual... read all the tips etc. You will pick up things along the way.

howd you know that ive got a t4.

So exactly how often should i wait to open my whole tranny up diff and everything and clean it and grease it over.What should I remove the grease from everything with?

You shouldnt have to take apart the tranny. After a couple months of running just check to see everything is properlly greased and meshed.
