threaded (sowing) maxx tires, stop balloning?
 

Hi,

like the title says, has anyone sowed their tires with a good thread all the way around to completely get rid of ballooning? Sound like a good idea, only thing, I already glued my tires to the rims.

I have seen some people use small zip ties to keep the tires from ballooning... probably wouldnt work so well for racing - but for general bashing would prob work ok..

I have used the classic duct tape on the inside of the tire trick in the past and it worked pretty good. I just think the thread would get chewed up pretty quick though. Maybe sew it with good fishing line.

Or Kevlar 49 ;)

It's unbelievably strong, but it's abrasive stuff, might just chew threw the tire after a while, if the tire tread last long enough. Or maybe the forces are spread out enough that it would work wonderfully.

When I was down in Iraq and needed to sew something I would use dental floss instead of thread it works really well. It would eventually rip through whatever I sewed but the floss never gave out.

With a centerdiffs a bit of difference in front/rear wheel diameter doesn't hurt as much as with a solid centershaft though.

I think you can boil the tires/rims to get them back apart after you have glued them. Anyone tried this?

I've done the duct tape on the insides of the tires thing and it does work to significantly reduce the ballooning. The downside is that the tape usually lets go at some point; and if this happens before the tires are worn out, you're screwed. I had considered using bead locks just because of this.

As for boiling the tires and wheels to get them apart, I don't know if it will work. I do know that it will make the wheels softer, possibly making them more susceptible to warping. I've often boiled graphite or hard plastic parts to make them bend more and less likely to crack. Usually the suspension arms. This is why I don't boil my wheels when I dye them. I just boil the water and then pour it into a bucket and dip the wheels for a little time as possible. The dye doesn't go as deep, but the wheels don't get too soft either.

I guess that depends on how you clean your tires? i cleaned mine with some rubber cleaner which solves a thin layer, I don't recall the type of duct tape anymore though, it must have been Pattex or 3M. The tires didn't survived the duct tape.

With thin tires grip will be less if you put duct-tape in it. Something to consider.

I did clean my tires with acetone before duct taping with 3M tape. Of course the setup I was running in my T4 was a Mamba Max 7700 system on 3S lipo. It was pretty insane to begin with.

I'm going to try to come with a solution with the tires already mounted.

It seems odd to me that duct tape would actually have enough hold.

You'd be surprised at the holding power of duct tape, especially when you give it a clean surface to adhere to.

Whats the easiest way to go about putting duct tape in a tire?
