Turbine Fan for BL Motors

Folks, you know about these integrated fans on the Plettenberg motors.
Can somebody please try to explain how they work/look on the inside. Or maybe even post a pic.

I got the idea of making something like this myself.

What do you think? A selfmade part (lathe) on the endbell of the motor, whit a fan (possibly attached to the shaft) and air directed along the can.

Might be a silly idea...

Seems like a lot of work for a fan!

Dafni 05.25.2005 07:43 AM

Indeed :L: This is no easy project.
Was just an idea, though. But I guess this would be even something that would sell.
I've never been happy with fans on motors, just blowing on one side.

Look, a bell covering the whole motor, with a fan that is somehow attached to the rear end of the shaft... ah, I can see it clear in my head.

How do those fans on the Pletts work? Do they blow over an inner can, or do they even blow thru the gap between the windings and the magnet?

Do you have to have a fan on your ESC? I read alot about temperature checks and fans, huge heatsinks and stuff but never heard about anyone having anything overheat and damage?

Dafni 05.25.2005 09:18 AM

Well, the more experienced RCer's can tell you more than I. But basically the cooler the better, ESC and Motor, of course.

The Neodymium magnets in our BL motors loose their strenght gradually when they get to hot. Depending on the grade of the alloy, they loose the magnetism above 120°C.

You can keep temps low with proper gearing, though.
This topic has been discussed many times. I remember a thread I made, called "questions on heat"

Found it, will give it a read thanks. :)

The rear shaft is just a little bit longer, and it's screwed on with an M3 screw.
look here The fan is mounted on a bit conical part of the shaft.

I would not got through al that trouble.. Just install the RC-monster heatsink or buy the 540 sized Lehner heatsink. (matches my proline powerstrokes very nicely... HINTHINTHINT)

Dafni 05.26.2005 01:27 AM

Oh gosh, they stole my design!

Thanks for the pics, Serum. A nice motor, too bad it had to go.
I'm still dreaming of the Maxximum.

Lehner heatsink?? Never heard about that. But I do have one of Mikes now.

Not that I would expect it to fit any other motor, but is this Plett fan available separately?

Serum 05.26.2005 02:28 AM

Try contact plettenberg.

You could get the maxximum as soon as there are other controllers available that can take them.. (i presume you are waiting for that?)

Dafni 05.26.2005 02:38 AM

Yeah, I'm waiting for this MGM 16120. Let's see when it comes out, and what people say. One fine day I might get a MGM / Maxximum combo.

Yep, already wrote to Plett. Let's see.

Searched around for "Lehner Heatsink", could not find pics.

here it is!

Suited for the 19 series (36 mm in diameter, the same as the wanderer/feigao's (540 sized))

Kind of a bummer that their site certificate is mismatched and expired 4 years ago.

Looks like a nice heat sink.

I don't know what the problem is, but this is actually the shop of the all known BK/LMT (producer of the warrior controller).... Nothing wrong with them at all? Or with their site? i don't get an error. perhaps it has got something to do with the linking of the PHP script.

That was it. I went to the site directly, no cert issue doing that. :-)

Who was it that had the fans mounted to the controller?

Pics please? Cost to do that?
