Which charger for 8000mah 3s lipo?

im torn between these 2 chargers http://www.electrifly.com/chargers/gpmm3153.html and this one http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...MRC_989&cat=19 the triton i can get from a buddy for 75dollars and the super brain i would have to buy which one should i get and why or why not your help appreaciated

If you are going to limit your choices to those two, I'd go with the 989. The Triton has a 90W limit on charge output, so unless I'm mistaken, charging the 3S 8Ah pack at 1C (8A) will really be pushing the limits of the charger. The triton also tops out at 5S. The 989 should be able to do a max of 10A, probably up to 5S at that current, so 3S at 8A shouldn't be a problem.

Be sure to get a balancer too. I'd recommend the Hyperion LBA10, if you are going with the 989 or a Hyperion charger (which wouldn't be a bad idea to look at).

A 3s pack at 8A will require 100.8W right before it switches to CV mode. Personally, I'd find something with a higher power limit to help future-proof yourself if you decide to get higher capacity cells. Of course, you can use a smaller charger; it will just limit the charge current to maintain the power limit...

if he's not limiting his choices between those two, what charger/balancer would you recomend? River's a buddy of mine, and asked me what charger to get.. I don't really have a clue, but scanned the forum, and the 989 was recomended quite a bit, and shouldn't have any problems charging his pack.
what are the alternatives?

Well, there are many chargers out there that are good for the money. The 989, the Ice, and a few more that don't come to mind right now. If you want better than good for the money, in my opinion, you should be looking for a charging system where in you get either a balancing charger, or a charger/balancer combo that interact with each other. I can't recall the name of the balancing charger, but it's around $300, plus the power supply (or you can just run it on your car battery). It's made by e-station. I've never used this before, so I can only make comments based on what I've read. It's supposed to be a good charger and it will take all of the worry out of charging your lipos.

The other two are ones that I have had experience with. The first is the Hyperion EOS1210i with the LBA10 balancer. The second is the Thunder Power 1010C with the Thunder Power balancer (this is what I use). Either of the setups work in a way in which the charger and balancer interact with each other, watching out for under voltage or over voltage in individual cells and then take appropriate action. My setup, if it reads an over voltage situation, will reduce the charge current to a rate that the balancer is able to bleed off so that the cell in danger of over voltage doesn't charge any more, but the others continue to charge until they catch up, then it returns to the normal charge rate. The 1010C can also be upgraded via usb link ($30 option) to the latest software. In fact, they just released a software upgrade that includes profiles for A123 cells. Since I just use the 5 cell balancer, it cost me around $40, the charger just under $200, plus the power supply.

The Hyperion setup also has the balancer and charger interacting with each other. It is a neat setup in that you can actually network two balancers together to charge and balance two packs at the same time, which comes in handy if you are running two packs in series or parallel. On the down side, the Hyperion, as far as I know, isn't upgradeable. I've never done the networking thing though. I only run single packs. This will run you just under $200 for the charger and balancer, plus the power supply.

I really like my 1010C. I don't know what they did with the algorithm, but it charges fast. Faster than my Ice did anyway.

well i charge 24 nimh cells at 6A on 989 so thats over 170W of charging power. its simple to user, has over 20 slots for profiles. really like it

riverat1540 04.05.2007 05:58 PM

thanks guys im gonna go with the 989

AAngel 04.05.2007 06:30 PM

If going with the 989, get the Hyperion balancer. You will, at least, be able to charge through the balancer and it will at least keep you from blowing up a battery due to overvoltage to one cell. It will just shut down the charging operation.

can the ice charger charge 2 8 cell battery packs at a time with an adapter
