8XL, Mamba Max or Quark 125 Pro and heat
Hi all.
If all turns out well I might get an oppertunity to build me a E-Revo with some help from a local magazine. The idea is to build an E-Revo that can keep up with a normal equipped nitro Revo. I want to keep it stock as much as possible and try to do it "on a budget". My thoughts are to use Mike's new motor mount, original tranny, probably 2x MaxAmps 2S2P 8 Ah LiPo (I have them in my E-Maxx). For the motor I have to something like an 8XL (or similar) in mind for budget reasons. ESC will be Quark 125 Pro if budget allows it otherwise a Mamba Max. If some has better ideas for a setup please let me know. I currently cant charge LiPo above 3S since I only have an MRC 997, so that limits my options abit. How would the above setup deal with heat and thermal issues ? I am used to the Hv-Maxx so I got fans all over the place in my E-Maxx :002: The Quark can easily be cooled with heatsink+fans but what about the Mamba Max ? I also wonder about the 8XL (or what ever you suggest) would that run hot as well ? I'd really like to use the 2x2S2P 8 Ah (4S) LiPo to the full extent runtime wise, ie be able to go for about 30-40 minutes without any heat issues and still keep up/beat the nitros. |
I have a MM& 8xl and have had no heat issues whatsoever, at least from the ESC. The big factor is having a small fan on the ESC. I have a 5V 25mm fan and that's enough to keep it under 130F, even in 90* heat. Else the temps were 160-170. The motor tended to run 160-170.
I've only ever thermalled once, that was running WOT through long wet grass in hot Aug heat. MM is great for 4S setups. |
I have the MM/8XL setup in two pretty heavy trucks and have had no issues with heat. They run well and should do better in your lighter truck.

Sounds great ! Are you guys running with a heatsink or not ?
Can the heatsink be used with Mikes new motormount for the original Revo tranny ? |

Ive run w/ both. From 12 cells to 16, and 4S to 5S.
The best combo is 4S. 5S is sick amounts of power, and is only good for street driving and speed runs. Vid NiMh is too heavy, esp more than 14 cells. My truck weighs just around 10 lbs. Is almost 100% stock over than conversion parts. I spent an hour continuously driving it today, ESC was 130F max and motor was 166F max. |
I'm torn right now between the MM and an 8XL or going with a Novak HV system. The MM and 8XL seem to have the upper hand power and speed wise, but from everything I've read the NHV 6.5 is about as easy as it gets for brushless power, plug and play, runs cool, runs a long time on a charge, good power for a noob. The draw back being you give up a little of the 8XL top end, or at least that's my impression from doing a lot of reading. I'm really leaning toward the simplier solution and going with the Novak set-up. Another plus being the ability to use the pinion selection I have for my E-Maxx.

I also run on 4S and 5S. For 5S, a 9XL would do better. An 8XL on 5S is just stupid. It's too much power to do anything with.

Well, if you go with the Novak, you're pretty much stuck with the Novak stuff. If you go with the non sensored stuff, and you get a MM with an 8XL, later on you could get another controller like an MGM or Quark, or you could add to your battery of motors. You'd really be surprised at how much fun a low turn motor (9XL or 10XL) can be on 4S when you get into running in a place where speed gets you nothing, like through rocks or hill climbing.
Personally, I have a bunch of motors. Different motors for different purposes. |

Will the MM & 8XL combo accept a 14 cell set up? It's only rated at 12 in the store. I'll be on 14 cells from the beginning. Would the Feigao 540C 8XL be a good starting candidate with the Mamba Max and Mike's motor mount? Sorry for all the noob questions and I hope I haven't hijaked the thread. I appreciate all the help and guidence you guys dish out so freely. This place has been a wealth of knowledge for me already. Cajun |
I need answers for the same question so dont worry about hijacking.

In my experience, the 8XL is a good all around motor. I do street driving, but also off-road, grass, and some hill climbing and such @ contruction sites (climbing needs judicious use of teh trigger tho. :) ) The temps I quoted in the above post was when I had just come back from a good residential const site. It had empty streets, rock fields, 20ft dirt piles and some grassy park areas. I stood on top of one of the hills and just drove all around the diff areas and it was good in each. Thru the rocks, up the hill, down the backside, blast thru the grass, then down the street and come around to the rocks again. Loads of fun and no angry neighbors @ loud nitros. Consider what driving you do most and tailor the motor to that, or get several motors if you got the cash.
At no time did I get any cogging whatsoever. I can drive ~1mph w/o cogging. A did have a few novak BL systems (GTB and SS5800) and IMO the CC is smoother and cogs same if less. If you plan to do crawling then Bl is not the setup for you most likely. I do run a RX pact instead of a UBEC. They have been the only glitching probs for me (w/ FM radio), which leads to next point.. The MM can certainly run more cells than 12, but the internal BEC must be disabled and a seperate BEC or Rx pack must be used. I prefer a RX pack. Lastly, the 5mm shaft is a good thing. Much stronger than the 1/8" with that much power. The revo tranny uses a Mod1 spur, so 32p emaxx pinions won't work. If using an emaxx tranny, using a strobe slipper w/ mod1 spur is highly recc'd. You shouldn't need too many pinions (I have 2.) The MM is as simple as it gets. Aside from the Rx pack, its the same setup as the HVs, but with far more powerful programming, and a huge diversity of motors to use. Just get the idea that Novaks are simpler or cog less out of your head. :) |

Finnster is right, the HV is as simple to hookup as a DVD player, but once you get hooked on brushless you will want more. Then you'll kick yourself for buying a system thats not nearly as adjustable, powerful, or upgradeable as a 8xl \mm setup. Ask me how I know.:007: If Novak had an other higher performance controller and 4 or 5 different motors to choose from it would be a tougher choice. Get the 8xl or 9xl with a MM. I've owned Novak, MGM, Quark, and MM's and the MM was by far the best for me. |
I had an HV Maxx, and all it ever did was over heat on me. I run the Quark Neu and love it, I also have a 10xl on a MM esc on 5s lipo and love it too! :)

Ok, you guys have talked me into it. I'm gonna go with the MM and an 8XL as my initial set up. I really like the idea of the versitility of the sensorless system. So what else do I need to complete the set up? A UBEC? A capacitor? How do I disable the internal BEC on the MM? Since I'm going with a separate component system, I can start picking up some of the small things I'm gonna need to complete the build.
Thanks for all the help guys and miniG, you sure I'm not hijacking your thread? |
