Neu motors - D vs. Y winds

Hey guys,

I have a 1515 2.5D coming in, but now that I think about it, it may be too much. I'm running an 8XL on 5S and it is stupid powerful. Full throttle is uncontrollable. I am now thinking that I should have gotten the 1.5Y which has a slightly lower kv rating.

I've also heard that the Y wind motors are more efficient. Is this true and if so, does it make a difference?

Is anyone one else running a 1.5Y? How do you like it? I'm going to be running mine in my Muggy conversion.

no, not neccesarely more efficient. They are wound in a different way. not meaning that both a Wye and a delta of the same KV value could be close in effiency.

I have got a 2200kv neu laying here, waiting for a 5S project.

They seem to be able to handle it quite well. the 1515 comes in a 4100kv too.. :p

When I said that the 2.5D on 5S might be too much, I wasn't worried about the motor being able to handle it. I was worried about my truck being able to handle it.

The 2200kv motor on 5S is going to be insane.

Efficiency wise they are pretty close to each other, Y will have copper losses while D will have core losses.

In the past (and sometimes in present) D windings were more hard on ESC to identify rotor position, nowdays electronics are much better...

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, there really is no advantage of getting one over another. I'll keep the one with the kv rating that I want.

I did have one thought though. Is it possible that while the Mamba Max comtroller might have problems running a Nue motor with a D wind, it might have less trouble running a Nue motor with a Y wind.

Which is the lesser of the evils; copper losses or core losses?

Thats a good thought...
copper vs core -> hard to say from motor side copper from generator core
