1/18 scale question
 

Hey guys,

A friend of mine returned an RC18MT to me that I forgot that I even owned. Of course, all sorts of things started running through my head. Going to the LHS tomorrow with this thing.

Anyway, I'm going to get the 8000kv and 4600kv motors. My first question is...is there any reason that I can't run a MM esc in this thing, provided that I can find the room?

What should I go ahead and upgrade now to prepare?

Well you can run any ESC you like but dont try to put MM motors in it. you will shred the drivetrain. regular small mamba is enough

RC18T with 8000kv mamba on 3S is uncontrollable rocket (friend got it)

Really, the only upgrade needed for brushless in the RC18 family are the factory team aluminum dogbones or CVD's. Also, be sure your diffs are shimmed well and you should be good for quite a few packs before anything needs an overhaul.

I'd also recommend you try and get a Mamba 25 ESC for it. The MM ESC is not only large, but also heavy (~2.5oz) for an 18th scaler.

I had no idea that the RC18 would stand up to the brushless that well, but it's good to hear.

They stand up to brushless really well. You shouldn't have to upgrade anything for a few packs. But eventually, the wear will start kicking in, and the diffs will probably die. So if you want to be safe, Then I'd recommend MIP CVD's front and/or rear and MIP super diffs in the front and/or rear. With this set up, you should be fine with almost any setup.

A MM is a little too much in a such a small rc like this one IMO.

I think I am going to go with the MM. I'm just going to replace all of the wiring with some good 14 gauge to make things a bit more manageable. I want to use the MM because I don't want to have to worry about the esc heating up. The MM shouldn't even break a sweat in the RC18.

If you did not get the Mamba setup, I recommend you to get the Mini Rage instead. At 3s, you'll do 70s with eaaaaaase!!!

Really? My LHS handle the Tekin stuff too. Doesn't the MR setup include a hacker motor? I don't know if that's a good thing.

I don't have the Mamba "setup" yet. I have a bunch of MM controllers. I was just going to pick up an 8000kv motor and something a bit milder as well.

What's the big deal about the MR? Is the motor a higher kv? If so, I could just get a C4 motor. I think I saw a 9000kv model.

Mike tried them and liked them. One of the members here put the 6400 mini rage in his little truck with a 3s flightpower and it made wonders.

Do you want it driveable or nothing but a street rocket? A 6800 on 2S is more than enough for driving on a track or bashing. Anything more than that is just about only good for driving on-road. Also, the Mamba ESC doesn't get anything more than barely warmer than ambient in my RC18T with the 6800. The motor does get a bit warmer though, but never anything to be worried about.

Also, IIRC, the Tekin motors are nothing more than rebadged Mamba motors. They all have the same kv ratings even. The ESC is the difference.

It is very easy to overpower these little things with brushless, so be careful with the standard more power is better tactic with this. Too much power will just keep your front wheels off the ground constantly or piss you off because you're constantly stripping diffs, no matter how well you shimmed them.

id run a 6800 kv, its the best combo for everything, u can get the most speed, and the most run time

Mine went about 40mph with the Mamba 6800 on 6 cells (IB1400) and the motor, nor the esc got so hot I couldn't touch it. I could easily gear up to get more speed. I also got about 20 minutes of run time... 25 if I was lucky. But this system really is very efficient.

The higher the KV motor you run = more heat problems and less runtime the 6800 Mamba is a real good all around motor on 2s it is great for the track fast and controlable if you want more speed 3s is fun and on 4s it's a rocket:005:

The MM esc is overkill I dont know if it is limited on max rpm? you can turn these little motors up to 100,000rpm

If you want to run high voltage the Quark 33a ESC is good for 5s the Mamba ESC is good for 4s as far as upgrades get the MIP diff's with the Asc. carbide balls and they will last a lot longer with the added power. :)

The RC18B is a onroad only car I have been running a 4s 2100 Maxamp pack in for almost a year now with a variety of motors and the driveline has held up great it's basicly a RC18B ft kit with a carbon chassis and MIP diff's with CVD's in the front and it's been over 80mph with the 6800 Mamba on 4s I'm hoping to get it over a 100mph by July for the worlds fastest RC challenge.:032:

Runtimes with a 2100mah pack?
8000 Mamba = around 30min
6800 Mamba = around 45min
5700 Mamba = around 55min
Wraith 7k = around 25min

I've never really messes with this small stuff before. Do I have to disable the bec (if there is one) to run 4S?

Seems like someone needs the Pheonix HV ESC to run 6S Lipo on the 4600 motor. :D
