Revo conversion question?
Guys, I'm thinking of going from my brushless savage to a revo and had a couple of questions for the masters :027: Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my savage :043: :043: , but it's a big fat pig :040: and pigs break things... I'm guessing that I could easily save 3+ pounds flipping to the revo, gain acceleration and top end and significantly reduce breakage (maybe).
1) This truck will be used completely for bashing and I wondered how the gorillamaxx chassis hold up or if I'm better off\same, just staying with the stock 3.3 chassis and fabing my pack mounts :032: :032: 2) I'll be bringing over my quark and my 8XL from the savage and have considered going with dual, 6 cell A123 packs for 4600mah @ 19.8 volts. My question, is this a solid idea or do I fab up some protection for them and stick with the maxamps 6000mah packs I'm running now? I've spanked so many of these packs on rocks, sticks, fences, etc, etc and they ain't cheap to replace, hence A123s are sounding real nice!! 3) I'm actually planning on sticking with the two speed tranny & mechanical brakes, I'll be adding Mikes 1/8 diff set up for it, do I go truggy or buggy gears, I'm assuming 13/43 I believe it is? 4) I'm assuming that a UBEC that worked on 6S would also work on the A123s? Awesome forum, the best actually, appreciate the info!! Thanks :018: :018: |
1: Well, the Gorilla chassis sits kinda low so I don't know how well it will do for bashing. Plus, I never liked the way the bulks attached - seemed like a weak point to me. The stock chassis is plenty strong enough and works well with a little fabbing.
2: 8XL on 6s A123 is a tad bit on the high side of the rpm scale, but should be fine as long as you don't max out the speed all the time. Other than that, those cells would be just fine, especially for bashing. Either way will work just fine I think. 3: I would go with the buggy gears. Even at 43/13 (3.3:1 ratio), it will be geared lower than the stock of 2.86:1. The truggy gears would be geared even lower at 4.3:1. You don't want it geared so low that you can't get any speed out of it. :) 4: The UBEC doesn't know (or care) what kind of cells are feeding it as long as you don't exceed the recommended input voltage and output current. |

Another crazy question on the revo, how durable is the thing really? I know I put my savage through heck and it just keeps on running? |
Like anything, you'll find the weak spots as you run it. For me, it was the arms and the axle carriers (the pillow ball kept popping out). I replaced both with RPM and haven't had any problems since.

BG, love the revo, followed your sig and checked out the hardware. I like how you mounted your pack on one side, excellent idea and it keeps the wiring simple too! How's the balance, I have to guess pretty good with the motor, esc and steering servo on the opposite side?

May I suggest going with a 9XL instead? I am running a 7XL with 5s A123 2p, it is crazy fast, 6s on 8XL would be even faster, and hotter most likely.
I wish had went with an 8XL instead for 5s2p as mine is way powerful enough, so I would not mind milding it down a tad, plus running a little cooler as well. |

On that thought though, 5s would be 18.5 volts, I'd be running the A123, only 3.3v per, so only 19.8 volts (I'd be running 6S, 2 - 6 cell 2300s in seris for 4600 mah), yea. close to the bleeding edge, but the Nemesis motors are cheap and I don't plan on blasting her wide open for long halls, I just like to have that little extra "pop" at top edge of the jumps :027: :027: I'll run mikes heatsync & fan setup with the case colling mod on the Quark, adn starp mikes with heatsync\clamp on the motor with a nice block of aluminum under the can synced to the chassis and cross my fingers. I've been looking for a ggod excuse to snag me a Neu or a nice 1950 :004: :004: |
