brushless revo how to ?'s

looking to build a brushless revo but am curious about the motor mount sold on here does this retain stock revo trans

I am still really up in the air as to wether I want to go brushless revo or brushless savage looking for a great bashing truck and have been told both are good ways to go

Looking to run a mamba max esc with fiago 8xl or is there another esc motor combination in the same price range i should consider

entjoles 05.29.2007 08:57 PM

yeah , the mount is made to retain the stock trans, but if you do not want to lock the tranny in 2nd ,you need to use the stock brakes (locking the tranny in 2nd gear lets you have reverse and use the brushless motor for brakes)

the revo I am looking at has a few mods done are these things that could affect my using the stock trans with a brushless

Here are the ones that seemed relavant

robinson racing clutch bell and spur gear
rear brake kit installed
forward only converson kit

I dont mind the fact its forward only i dont tend to jump things backwards lol

entjoles 05.29.2007 09:09 PM

i think the spur needs to be a stock one ( or get a hardend pinion)
i have lots of diffing out problems with the center diff in mine
if you dont want reverse then you are pretty much set, id go with the foc and no rear brake , i am changing mine , jmho

Welcome to the forums!

If you use stock brakes, none of the mods will effect you. If you want to use "motor braking" there are a few minor mods you need to make. One of the recent threads addressed this specifically. Maybe we can find thagt for you. It has a wealth of info....

Good point entjoles...I forgot...

The stock Nylon spur is preferred or else you need a hardened pinion.....

Put on the sotck type spur!

I really appreciate the help guys a link to that post would be greatly appreciated with stock brakes will that allow me the in flight control u would get from motor braking

forgive my ignorance i am not very familiar with nitro and except that they are stronger for bashing have no desire to own one hence the reason to go brushless

One advantage to keeping the dual mechanical brakes is the ability to adjust brak bias which is something you can not do with "motor braking".

I am drooling at the thought of building this I picture it getting stuck on the roof of the local school at some point

gasshead 05.29.2007 09:31 PM

exatly. but most of the time the CD with a motor break will still act like a slid axle. i know because a buddy ad a BL 1/8th scale, still very consastant

BrianG 05.29.2007 10:00 PM

FWIW, I had no problems using the motor brake on my Revo with the CD installed. I just had issues diffing out with it in, and if I put in thicker fluid, I started losing the steering advantage of the CD while not fixing the diffing out issue much. IMO, remove the CD, but that's up to you.

As far as the transmission options:
  • Option 1: Two-speed transmission with stock brake and stock reverse:
You'll need servos for the reverse shifter and the brake. The downside to this is that the reverse stock mechanism is generally pretty weak, especially since you're now using brushless. And you cannot use a center differential because the diff replaces the shift fork, dog gear, and second output gear. You can however still use the Optidrive to help protect against accidental reverse when moving.

  • Option 2: Two speed transmission with mechanical brake and no reverse (the cheap way):
You'll still need a servo for the brake. Lock the shift fork somehow.

  • Option 3: Two speed transmission with mechanical brake and no reverse (the right way):
You'll still need a servo for the brake. Install the FOC (forward-only conversion) to eliminate reverse and get rid of the extra weight from the servo, Optidrive, assorted linkages, etc. This option lets you use a center differential if you want.

  • Option 4: Modify the transmission for single speed (2nd gear):
Lock the centrifugal clutch into second gear. See locking mechanism picture below. You don't have to, but you can also remove first gear altogether for a simpler and lighter tranny. Either way, 1st gear won't be used at all. Locking into second gear is the ONLY option where you can use the brake and/or reverse using the brushless motor.

And here is a method you can use to lock the tranny in second gear should you choose to do so:

http://scriptasylum.com/bl_conversio...ked_tranny.jpg

To do this:
  1. Remove first gear

  2. Do the FOC

  3. Install whatever gear set you want (std, wide, or narrow). Since each of these gear sets just adjusts 2nd gear, you can set a higher or lower ratio right off the bat to possibly allow better spur/pinion selections.

  4. Remove screw, spring, ball bearing, and little grey plastic plug on the centrifugal clutch.

  5. File three half-moon slots in the edge of the clutch lined up with three of the holes in second gear.

  6. Screw 3 4mmX10mm pan head screws into second gear so they lock into the half moon cutouts you made on the clutch.

wow so much to absorb but sounds like option 3 the no reverse and mechanical brakes would be the way i would go

I am currently working on the final details for the trade to get my revo so once it goes through expect many more questions from me lol

time to start saving for that brushless setup

what batteries do you guys typically run ? I was thinking i would go with nimh for now and move to lipo later once i get a balancer for my triton jr

BrianG 05.29.2007 11:40 PM

I'm running 14 GP3300 cells right now (~13min runtime), but want to move up to 5s lipo very soon...

00nothing 05.29.2007 11:50 PM

how do u find the power on the 14 cells being a jumper I may not necessarily be after ridiculous amounts of power especially after seeing video of the 8xl with 5s

3s is probably more what i would shoot for in a lipo

BrianG 05.29.2007 11:56 PM

Power is very good with 14 cells and a 9XL. The 8XL on 3s will be a bit weak IMO. I think you'd get better results going with 4s. And if it's a hair too fast, gear down a tad. It would suck to get a 3s pack just to turn around and get 4s later on after all...
