T4 with GM-Racing BL Motor
1 Attachment(s)
I recently purchased a FT T4 used on a forum to start racing with. Well, to make a long story short, I wanted a motor other than a Mamba Max or Feigao to use in it. I found a good deal on a GM-Racing 7.5T that I figured I would try. The motor is sensored, but is said to work well on sensored or sensorless ESC's, but I was still skeptical. To cut to the chase, here's my results with it:
Vehicle: FT T4 with Pro-Line Edge Front, Hole Shot Rears Gearing: 19:87 Battery: Trakpower 4900mAH Lipo ESC: Mamba Max Motor: GM-Racing 7.5T https://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=97233 Motor Spec Chart: Attachment 3028 I ran the truck in a field with really low grass (similar grass to a golf course fairway) and also on the infield of a baseball diamond that was dirt and grass. I ran it for almost 40 minutes and the temps never got to more then 134F on the motor and 121F on the ESC. Top speed with a fresh pack (verified by GPS) was 31.2mph. I was very happy with this setup as it ran pretty cool considering the temp that day was 88F. The runtime was excellent and the speed wasn't bad either, especially since it's really geared for off-road racing versus bashing. With the temps I saw, I have no doubt I could jump up 4-6mph with a gearing change and still be well within what I consider a safe operating temperature range. Also, cogging was a non-issue as I could nail the throttle and it would just take off. FWIW, these GM-Racing motors are supposedly the same motors as the Team Orion Vortex and Peak Racing Vantage. I also have a GM-Racing 5.5T that I will be testing out soon in another T4. As another tidbit, these motors have a fan built onto the rotor and make a weird whirring sound when you're driving. It sounds like something in your drivetrain might be buggered up, but it's just the way it sounds with the fan on the rotor. I just thought I'd toss out this info in case someone wants to look into a motor other than a MM or Feigao. |
Just a small update...ran my other T4 today with an Orion Vortex 5.5 Motor on the MM ESC. Same type of weather conditions as my post above and same type of driving and location.
Motor Temp: ~145F ESC Temp: ~130F Geared 18:87 with Hole Shot/Edge Tires Top speed was 38.3mph on the GPS which correlates very well to the motor being 6100kv unloaded (puts it around 58-5900kv loaded to get that speed). After having now run the GM 7.5 and Orion 5.5, I'll never buy a Feigao 380C or 540S motor again for running on 2S. I am extremely happy with the lack of cogging and the semi-cool temps I got with these setups. Granted they're not the fastest in the world, but I have room to gear up without a problem if I want more speed. |
skellyo, nice find. It's always good to have options and those speeds sound about perfect for a tight to medium size track.
Let us know how it turns out when you start playing around with the gearing. I'd be interested in know how sensitive to gearing the motors are. |
I'm supposed to be going to a track this afternoon to run them for a bit. I'm hoping to get some video while I'm there. I don't plan to mess with the gearing any today, but when I bash with them the next time out, I might see if I can get into the low 40's with the 5.5 if temps stay down.
