Brushless Savage - need to know some info!
 

Hey guys. I'm planning to do a brushless Savage X, but I need some help.

The motor mount will probably be the hardest, but I hope the folks at RC-Monster can come out with a mount for the Savage...

And I need to know what motor to use. I can use the Quark Monster Pro ESC and a 5s lipo, but I dont know what motor will be the best, and cheapest. I heard that the Neu 1515 1y will be good, but its kind of expensive at 280 bucks, and I dont know if it can handle 5s lipos. Also theres the Feigo 540c XL series of motors, but I dont know if that can handle 5s lipo either, and it seems like its designed for lighter buggies or truggies-not a big Savage X.

The 1515 1y would be good on 5s. Total rpm will be over 40k, but Neu's max rpm is 60k. What a motor can handle will be based on the kv rating. Most people shoot for ~35k max rpm. So, just take 35000 and divide by the voltage you plan to use (18.5 for 5s) to get the kv of the motor you need. And you can vary the kv in that area. For a heavier truck, I would go with the 1515 as it will run cooler. The XL motors are good, but can run on the warm side.

Thanks! How would the 540c-9xl compare to the Neu 1515 1y? I really need to save some cash, but I would like to retain some speed-I want at least 40mph. Is this possible with the 9xl?

Oh yes, You can hit 40mph with either motor. It's just that the Neu will stay cooler longer because it is more efficient. Also, the Neu will feel stronger as well. I would equate a 1512 with an XL power-wise. The 1515 is just stronger. I know it's a lot of cash for a motor, but it's really worth it IMO. I've used both types and am very happy with the Neu.

Neu 1515 2.5d (1700kv) is a good 5s motor from the experience I've had with it in my maxx. It has respectable speed on 4s if geared right and you could also use 6s for speed runs.
If your considering getting a neu now, like I did, then I'd suggest just getting the neu. I bought a feigao, was happy for a while, but got sick of worrying about the temps of everything and wanted a bit more power without pushing things too much, so I got a neu 1515 2.5d and wish I bought it to start with, it runs really cool and everything else seems to as well. Might have also saved 2 quarks.

Thanks for the info guys! I realized that I would be very over budget with the Neu motor, so I think ill stick with the 540c 8xl running on 5 cell lipo.

But what pinion should I run with the stock 2 speed tranny? 13 tooth?

If you run 5s, I'd suggest the 9xl. It will run cooler, and it won't be stupid fast like the 8xl.

I would use a fan to keep its head cool

i still think ill go 14 nimh cells and an 8xl how fast do you think it would go my savage wighs about 11-12 pounds
