Motor temps
 

Just got back from quite a hard run. For the first 10 minutes I did quite a few high speed runs, but mixed with some slower stuff aswell. I did a quick check on the motor and it's temp was 183F!!!. I let it cool to 160F and then run it with the body off. After doing this I noticed the temps didn't get above 150F at all.

I'm now considering putting a heatsink on the motor, and possibly cutting a hole in thw windshield of the body (nitro style). Would this have any affect on performance.


PS. Before anyone suggests gearing lower, I've already talked to Mike about this and I've got the exact gearing (maybe a little lower) that I need.

That is rather hot. Nothing to worry about, just get a heatsink and a small amount of airflow thru your body. A hole wont hurt too much. it is good for a motor to run cooler.

The magnetical power of the rotor will start fading from 230F

What did you measured? on the shaft or on the purple body?

I measured the purple body which was about 180F and then the backplate, which was around 183F. Outside temps today are about 70-75F.

hobbyect.com has really good prices for clamp on heatsinks. also you might want to consider a motor plate that is thicker and has grooves to disipate heat better like this one...

Mike stocks a motorheatsink, which are more efficient.

i have mikes heat sink, a hole in the windsheild, and a fan directly on the motor. temps before all that were about 200 on my 10L. now temps never get above 140. it makes a huge diference if you use a fan.

Ok...I had a thermal shut down during a race this weekend. I dropped 2 teeth and made it through the next two races. Question for you guys...what model fan do you buy? And when hooking it up do you hook it up to the 6v coming off the BEC or go for the 16.8v coming from the batteries? Any help would be appreciated.

I use the 40mm by 40mm fan from radio shack on most of the trucks I have(12 volt computer fan). I wire the fan to the Dean's connector on the controller so the fan comes on when the batteries are plugged in. It was a brutally hot weekend, so I am sure a few folks may have found the term "thermal" in their vocabulary this weekend. I thermalled myself, and had to come back inside to the a/c!

I have a 12v DC computer fan pointed directly at my motor (2400xl (16.8v), heat sink (http://www.bk-electronics.com/catalo...oducts_id=1249), and Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease).

My truck is geared 19/66 w/ several weight reductions, though I'm still testing on gp3300's (no LiPo's, yet). Haven't weighed my truck so I can't tell you the exact poundage, but its lighter than stock.

Ambient was 95f this weekend, after running around the track (WOT wherever possible) my temps hung around 125f.

I have a bk 18120 (which easily handles the current and heat), so I don't have additional warmth created by the speed controller.

Where my fan sits, the body is ventilated, the fan pulls fresh air and blows it inline w/ the heat sink fins.

The fan, btw, is connected "directly" to the batteries (i.e., it doesn't go through the BEC which would only deliver 6v). @12v the fan is rated 35cfm and too low an amp draw to matter and I'm pushing 16.8 through it.

When performing speed tests pre-heat sink, pre-fan, and pre-thermal grease I was able to reach 170f w/in a few minutes. The cooling system makes a huge difference in temps w/ no noticeable performance hit (extra ounce for the heat sink and .19I @ 12v).

mac, i use a radio shack fan on both my motor and controller. it was 93* yesterday and i had no thermal trouble. i run mine on 19.2 volts (16 cells)

PS... where were you racing?

Racing at our "home" track...Xtreme RC in New Milford. 5 Brushless trucks every weekend, sometimes more, all run with Nitro. Sometimes A/B/C Mains...

yup 273-240. they are a little pricey (12.99) but they work great. your Local radio shack should have them. i may try to make it down to xtreme this summer sometime. are you planing on going to any of the "major events" at rcmadness? (becides monster madness). that trophy race was a blast. see you later mac
