overkill setup for truggy ???

HI !

I'd like to know what motor, lipopack and esc setup i need to get a overkill setup in a 1/8 truggy :diablo:. I'd like to hit topspeeds of 60mph !!!

woud a neu 2,5d motor on 10 lipocells be good ?

Neu 1521 1y, 10S A123 (DeWalt pack), 51T spur and 14T pinion should do the trick.

You will have to elaborate what "overkill" means... it is completely subjective.

But, overkill for me would be a 1515/2.5D on 6s lipo, that should easily get you that 60mph you crave.

lol, especially since pretty much anything we run can be considered overkill compared to nitro standards.

Good point LOL.

I tend to agree with Brian, any BL setup IS overkill if you are coming from the nitro scene. But again, overkill has no meaning in the BL side of things anymore, indeed, it never did have a meaning.

I have a few vehicles that will do over 60. From what I've seen, the biggest limiting factor when pushing a truggy that fast is the tires. A 1515/2.5d on 6S lipo with gearing will get you to 60 pretty easily. The problem is controlling the truck. At 50, things really start to get hairy. At 60, things are down right scary. If you are going to go that fast regularly, I'd suggest very heavy shock fluid and heavy springs. For tires, I'd go with some GRPs. The Parks do very well for Monster Truck tires.

The best way to do it would be with a stiff suspension and GRP Rally tires, but you'll have to do a lot of gearing with the spur, pinion and front and rear diffs.

I've found that getting speed through sheer rpms is the worst way to do it, but that's just my opinion.

What setup is nessecery to outpreform a stock kyosho st us ? Woud a mm/feiago setup do that ?

AAngel 10.18.2007 11:44 AM

That's a pretty broad question. I consider dependability and efficiency to parts of performance.

I'm not trying to knock anyone's equipment, but I consider a MM/Feigao combo to be something that you run just until you can get something better. Where I am, the temps are just too high to get any sort of long running times with a Feigao motor.

If you are talking in terms of raw speed and torque, then I'll go out on a limb and say that a 7XL or 8XL on 4S will outperform a stock ST.

BrianG 10.18.2007 11:57 AM

Not to mention that a MM can only handle 4s. That limits motor choices somewhat since you can't run low kv motors at high V. Sure, you can gear up, but the added load on the ESC causes excessive heat and current draw.

No, I don't think a MM and 8/9XL will cut it to be considered "overkill". More like a Neu 1521 or 1527 on 8s using an MGM ESC would be overkill to me.

Yup. I think many people don't quite understand what they are getting into when they aim for "overkill" It's fun and all that...for about 2 - 3 white knuckle passes. I have some fast setups and it's rare that I get a full pack through them before I have some sort of "unintentional explosive disassembly" happen. I have a RC10B4 that will flip on its back whenever I pull the trigger. Fun? Eh, for the first 5 times or so, and then you've ground off your shock towers. I have the slipper set loose so that doesn't happen, and I'm limited to running on big parking lots, so maybe not as fun as you might think.

I think a more reasonable (read: usable) speed to aim for would be around 45 tops. That'll be a whole lot more fun IMHO. I only say this now, because your target speed will influence the components you buy. It would suck to spend all this money to have something you can't use, and then have to buy another setup that is more reasonable. Just my $0.02.

Good luck with whatever you end up with! :mdr:

lincpimp 10.18.2007 01:29 PM

I agree with the speed issue. If you are just hauling butt up and down a smooth road, 45-50 is good speed. If you are bashing off road, 40mph is about as fast as I want to go. Trees, hills, sticks, etc. are fun to play on at 30mph or so, but over 40 the jumps are starting to get high and the breakage seems to increase. Plus weight is a factor. The xl motors seem to work well in lighter weight vehicles, but bigger heavy vehicles with lots of batteries, all al parts, etc, will require the higher end motors. I wish I had more experience with the kb 45 motors, as they seem to be able to handle the heavier setups, and are still cheap.

yes i know that feago/mm isn't a overkill setup i just diden't whant to start a new thead just to ask how that combo preforms compared with the stocj kyosho gxr28 nitro engine that comes with the inferno st us rtr kit :) But i'll gett better preformance than the yunk kyosho engine right ?

nl12 10.18.2007 02:02 PM

I had a lehner 2240 on 8s lipo it was overkill, if I could achieve reliability on that kind of setup it would be fun.

lutach 10.18.2007 02:05 PM

My BPP truggy with the Neu 1521 1y, Schulze 40.160 and 10S lipos was a blast to drive. It is already overkill with 22.2 volts, but I just wanted to see what it would do on 37 volts. Overkill can't discribe it. I kept running out of space really fast LOL.
