Holes in the body to reduce heat?
Hi,
I have no holes in the body (keeps it very clean!), has anyone measued if there is a big difference between no holes and holes? I think my motor gets a little too hot and Im considering cutting a hole just above the motor. If I could use a body without holes I would prefer that. Has anyone any experince with this? I've had more issues with the ESC getting hot, rather than the motor. I usually make a slot in the body to direct air right to the heatsink, and then I don't have any problems. With my ZX-5, I have the ESC mounted high, so I cut out the front window so cool air blasts right on the ESC. Running that 7700kv setup heats the ESC up pretty good, so that works good to solve that problem.
I'm not so sure how much that would help a motor, unless you have some sort of finned heatsink on it. Smooth cans don't offer much surface area to dissipate heat. |
What exactly are your temps?
I tend to not like to cut holes in my body. Call it a perk of BL. I worry more about mud and water accidently splashing in on the electronics than some heat. I had a small fan on my MM esc that helped alot, otherwise I position the electronics near the rear wheelwell so it gets some airflow but in not really in the path of mud or water. Now I have a HV high efficiency setup that stays cool no matter what. Ex: Earlier this week I was bashing @ a const lot. It was fairly dry, but there was a soupy muddy patch that I hit fairly fast. Mud flew and coated the body. Worried about the electronics, I opened the lid. The inside was completely clean. I flung what I could off the body and continued on. |

I also have a fan on my mm, it helped alot! |

You are welcome. Everybody was debating the merits of cooling modifications so I fiqured I would see for myself. Good luck.

I think this:

I personally thought that with the motors touching the motor mount would help draw heat away from the front of the can. I may be wrong though.
