This guy actually blew a A123 cell + there was to fire!
 

This guy on the RCU forum managed to blow up a A123 cell and there was no fire! Very save cell for sure.

the first A123 cells where known to do this; their 'blow off valve' was missing or some sort.

They had serious issues with that.

Cool, I never knew that.

I didn't "blow one up", but it made a pop and registered .004v after that.

How safe is safe? Sure a hard cased cell can't burn your house down, but I would rather be standing next to a LiPo when it fireballed than an A123/NiMh/NiCd when it exploded, just a personal choice, I'd rather be left scarred by a fire than blinded by shrapnel.

Good point, but the bottom line is that we all need to take heed and make sure that when we charge our patteries we should have an appropriate place suited just for charging so that if something like this does happen that it will be contained and no big deal. This is great info for all of us. Thanks for the post of your experience.:lol:

wouldnt a lipo produce some sort of dangerous chemical? i know when i messed mine up i was inside my house and it made this AWFUL smell.

Rubbish, breathing in toxic fumes is what this hobby is all about; why else would we spend so much time hunced over soldering iron?.....

I prefer to get my "toxic fumes" a more natural way:wink:

Just as a follow up to this thread I thought I'd comment on my own misadventure.
For complex reasons I had to replace the Deans adaptor on my 5S pack.
I was lazy and simply cut the wires off the plug, retinned them and started to affix the negative lead to a new plug.
JUST as I was about to slide the heatshrink into place I moved the cells and the positive lead flicked up and touched the negative lead on the Dean's plug.
Zap.
The 12G was WELDED on to the solder and I couldn't pull it off.
It took 5 secs or so to cut the negative lead and in that time I heard a hiss and bubble. The pack and leads were hot as after a solid run.
One cell reads near-zero volts but looks normal. The rest are fine.
So now I have to run the Maxx off 4S2P, or maybe I'll try 9S with the HV ESC from UH......
