Setting Gear Mesh on Mod 1.0 Gears
I was playing around with the Rustler the other day and I though I would test fit a pinion on the motor to check clearances and w/e. I noticed that the pinion and spur would always make a noise that sounded like tight gear mesh but they had plenty of play. If I backed the pinion off enough to get rid of the noise it barely made contact with the spur. I was wondering how you should set the gear mesh with the Mod 1 gears? Can you use the "sheet of paper" method as with the 64p gears? I tried that but it seemed really tight. Do the gears have a break-in period? That would be wierd.

Is this metal on metal or no?
If it is, noise is pretty much unavoidable. I can hear my CRT .5's spur/pinion mesh no matter how far it is away... However, if its a plastic spur, you should be able to end up with a pretty quiet mesh. I adjust mine my sight and feel. I just put it in until its "bottomed out" and back it off very slightly. I spin the spur and the second it reaches a bind point, I'll back it off a little more until that frees up, and continue spinning it until all bind points are gone. This takes somewhat of a bit of time, but I find it results in the closest mesh without binding. The mesh is usually very quiet, and the MM ESC's "beep" from throttle is much louder. |
I'm using an XL5 slipper and Revo plastic spurs. I was just thinking that it's not really that loud. I only have 64p gears to compare it to which are always very quiet unless you get sand in them. The gears didn't feel as though they were binding at all but I'm used to them not making any noise.

Mod 1's are going to have a bit of noise, its the big teeth

OK, thanks crazyjr. It's funny they don't seem to make the same noises in any of the videos that I've seen of other members' trucks.

If you set is perfectly, it should have almost no noise at all, at least my Revo doesn't. Slow speed I am talking about.

The vertical an horizontal angles are critical also. I found this when I was trying to get noise out of my E-maxx with strobe slipper. The gears will run if the angles are off a tiny bit but they make more noise.
