shimming
How would I properly shim my hybrid bulks and 1/8th HB diffs? The pinion gear has a little play and I dont want them to get messed up.

Check reply #17 - experience with the HB diffs and shims needed.
http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...917#post128917 Basically shim out any side to side play while maintaining proper R&P mesh. I would dnload a copy of UE's instruction on setting up a UE diff - plenty of pics and straight forward to see what you're trying to accomplish. Its trial and error type work, try a set of shims and put it together and see if it feels right. If not right take it apart and make changes. You determine the shims required to eliminate side to side play and then start trying to fit pinion. Shims will have to be moved on the carrier to get the ring set to the right height. I usually start with enough shims to make it bind pretty good and then start dropping shims until its free but has no side to side play. Pinion - put it in and assemble - is it free or dragging/binding (even a little), if binding, move shims from ring gear side to the opposite. If its free, I take shim from side opposite ring gear and put on ring gear side. I do this until I can go from free to a little drag with one shim. Then I leave that shim out and know its set right. Last step is to shim pinion shaft to control how far in/out on the ring gear the pinion runs. Again, trial and error. First one will take a little while until you see what you really need to be doing. Second one will go much quicker. |
