Lipo Questions

I just have a few questions and one in particular to all of you who live in cold states. Do you leave you lipo packs outside in a garage over the winter time? Is is safe? And if not where are how do you store them? Lipo packs maybe? Also are their lipo's that are just plain safer than another or less likely to blow up? I have a Maxamps pack and some Truerc packs now and so far i have not had any problems i am just wondering what everyone else does.

I live in Denver CO
It can get cold here (18 right now)
I just keep my lipo in the garage
But I know that cold temp can mess them up

Then why store them in the cold????

I would say that most electrical devices like moderate temp s with low humidity. I try to keep mine in a dry area that does not get too hot. Just keep them in your house in a decent metal can/ammo box and they should be fine.

I discharge mine to about half capacity and store them in a metal tool box in the basement...

Well, its 75F (24C) here right now headed to 80F (27C) today. Lets compare temps again when its July...!! Last real winter we had was in '90 when we had about a week of 12-16F (-11 to -9C) weather. I'd like to live somewhere it gets cold enough to kill all the bugs off every year.

You could be in Ft McMurray where my last contract was - its -25C!

Man, thats cold!

The main reason why i did'nt like winter is because we don't have any interior place to run ours R/C.

Mike_D 12.01.2007 07:28 PM

Yeah same here. I hate winter too because there is no indoor place to drive in minnesota in the winter. It's freezing today and there is a foot of snow in my driveway right now. Does anyone here use a lipo sack?

entjoles 12.01.2007 08:38 PM

what kind of indoor track you looking for

there is a dirt offroad track for 1/10, carpet racing , and a whole indoor nitro series in mn. in the winter

check out... mn nitro series

here...

no i use a ammo box as well, check out mills fleet farm , last time i was at one they had a few for like $5 in the sporting goods area

you can charge and store in it

Duster_360 12.01.2007 08:56 PM

I use a porcelain plate to charge on and just leave them on my work bench until I need to use one.

Be careful about discharging them to half capacity for storage - I've just recovered from losing 5 lipos that were stored and found badly puffed when I came back (was gone for 90days). It was the cell on the top that puffed on all them, not sure what thats about.

I'll be storing mine with near full charge from now on.

Mike_D 12.01.2007 09:15 PM

Thanks i know all about the nitro series. I did know about the track in Foley but only that they had an outdoor one. When did the indoor one come up? From the pic it seems kind of small for a 1/8 scale buggy. I don't have any 1/10 scale vehicles right now, but i may have to get some now. I'll have to go check out the man mall for an ammo box that's a good idea.

I've read on a few places, that best to charge them to 50% for long term storage.. but not too many of my cells sit too long.. I try to use them all year round... maybe the balancer that you were using had a brain fart, if it's the same cell?..

I charge mine in a pyrex pot, and put a lid on it... but I have sand and a small fire extinguisher handy just incase something was to happen...:surprised:
