Needing help with finding the right Motor and ESC
Hello everyone. I hope this site can help me out since this is something different then another conversion. As of many years ago I came across an MRC Thunder king. I fixed it up, and fixed it up and 4 Evolutions later I ended up with what you see below. I am once again re building this beast into a bit more worthy racer that hopefully can make it in 15 Minute mains with the Nitro's It will not look much less like this, but ONLY beefier, stronger, and a full metal gear box with some bite care of RC4WD.com. If anyone can suggest a good Brushless motor and ESC that wont kill my pockets and at the same time will provide excellent responce for a race. That would be great. any help would be appreciated and when this truck is done. I hope it will be welcomed among the challengers here.

Welcome to the forum.
That is an absolute awesome looking truck. By "wont kill my pockets"... about how much is this? Unfortunately there is not a middle costing system on the market right now for a truck your size. There is the MM ESC that can be run with a Feigao 9xl. That will be about $250. Then there are the Neu motors which will run you about $280 - $300, and you will still need to buy a $250 - $300 ESC to run that motor. |
See, I dont really know too much about the whole brushless motor thing. I live in a novak world and only recently found that there are better choices. I heard of the Neu motors and dont really know too much about which one I would choose. Same goes for the ESC's I am totally lost in getting upgraded.

any chance you know how much your truck weighs so we can have an idea of how much power will be needed.

very clean truck

Thank you very much for the props on the truck guys. Umm the truck weighs about 14 lbs with 2 of the 3300 NiMH batteries. With those 2 titan motors, it got an average speed of 32 MPH but that only lasted about 5 Minutes then it would taper off. I was having no problems getting air on jumps and its weight was so equaled that it would land pretty nicely. But like I said, we were dealing with alot of un nessesary weight as compared to todays possibilities. I figure with 2 lipos it should drop pretty good. Loosing the 2 motors for a single should toss some weight, and I should also gain some more weight with the few plastic to aluminum and or carbon fiber changes that will be occuring. I have everything now as far as items, I need to figure out how to cut these pieces of carbon fiber since I never have done it. and I am waiting for the Trans finished and to be sent back to me. when all that is done the final step is to match all the screws with hardend steel or titanium hex driver screws. I might even red powdercoat the chassis

Welcome dude... Good idea with the diamond plate vinyl.. I'm gonna do the same.. I like the shine... For your setup, how much do you want to spend.. and what's your power source?.. how many cells.. NiMH, A123, Lipo, NiCAD, Alkaline, Carbon ?.. LOL j/k

nice looking truck bro.. super clean.

Well that vinyl carbon fiber is taking a walk. I have a sheet of 1mm real red carbon fiber for the top plate that will be going on in it's place. the three pieces of shock towers are also being replaced by real carbon fiber. all the a arms are being replaced with custom aluminum arms, new steel control rods, new steel gearing and aluminum casing, new wheels (40 series) loosing the venom speed meter, the novak receiever is taking a walk for 2.4ghz fast tech., the battery source i was thinking about was Venoms 5400 11.1 lipo's, but I dont think I can run (2) 11.1 batteries on a brushless ESC, can I? or is it I would have to look for (2) 7.4v batteries? And that is the question of what motor to run and what ESC to run. like I said i was thinking about Novak since I had run it before. But Im intrested in the Neu Motors and have no ide which one to run and what esc to run with it?

Welcome T36! I saw this over on the chitownrc forum.
I think that 14lbs may be on the heavy side for a Mamba Max setup. You may need to go a little higher end on the esc to be able to run trouble free and keep the temps down. The novak system will struggle with a beast that heavy also. Probably not the way to go there either. As for ESCs that are available now, the Quark 125B and the MGM 160/16 would be my recomendation for the heavier weight monster truck. I personally like the MGM better because you dont need a external BEC to run the high voltage 4s lipos. It has a built in switching BEC that will handle those voltages and that make setting the system up much simpler and cleaner. 4s lipo should be enough to get that thing around the track with authority. If you go with the Quark or MGM you could always throw in 5s just for some fun speed runs or crazy bashing power, but for the track 5s will probably be hard to drive with that much power. For a big truck like that I would look at at least 6000mah lipos if you want to make the 15 minute main. possibly even the 8000s depending on how you drive. If you are looking for a Neu motor, the 1515-1Y on 4s would be a very nice fit on 4s with plenty of power for the track. I would look at getting the smooth can version if possible. It looks like you may have a tight fit and the Neu motors are already bigger in diameter than the titans you have in there now. The finned can version are even biigger in diameter and might have some interfearnce with the upper deck. I'm assuming you would mount it to the lower motor position to keep the weight as low as possible. With the Neu you wount need the extra cooling fins anyway. They run cool enough. For a lower cost system, the Mamba Max on 4s and a Feigao 9xl will get you going, but you may have to gear more conservatively to keep the heat in the system down. Fans on the Mamba Max and motor would be in order, and the RC-Monster motor heat sink would be a must to keep the motor clamped together. The 3rd possibilty is to wait a few more months. the Mamba Monster Max is supposedly going to be coming out in early 08. That could possibly be a drop in system for you with no figuring at all. It would be the middle of the road system you are looking for performance/price wise. Its estimated at around $300 for the esc/motor combo. But at this point its all still just a fable. Thay have been talking about it for years now, so who knows if they will actually come thru this time. Sweet looking truck, when you get it all done and you are going to take it up to Leisure Hours let me know. I'll bring my e-revo out and meet you there. |
if your going to run on 6s the esc is going to be pricey, but with a 4s setup you can go for a MM which is about $130 at most places(incl. rcm)
|
I agree with Jhautz, pretty much summed it up perfectly. One question though- how much are you really willing to spend in total? Good lipos can be had for a very reasonable price these days, but good motors and escs are still a little on the expensive side; lets all cross our fingers for the MMM to come out in Feb, as that will become the new standard I reckon.

Thanks guys, man your all very helpfull in this side of RC. I like Nitro, but Electric is where it started and where it is now.

that really is a gorgeous truck.

Again thanks for the props on the truck. I hope you all think that when it is done.
