E-Maxx Outrunner

I bought one of the Outrunner setups on E-bay a while back. Before I ordered it, I called Castle Creations and asked them if I could run the outrunner with my MM controller. The tech said no problem, I might just get a little cogging (I don't want to see what a lot looks like) but there will be a software update later this month (June, I think). Of course the update still hasn't been completed and I just now finally got a Quark 80b to run the thing. Sure enough, the day the Quark arrived we got snow so I'm still waiting to really test it out.
These are some early pics from back in June. I'll get some new ones up later.

Check this guy out "sikeston34m"

He made the conversion and sold it to you. He could answer any questions you have.
By the way Welcome to the forums!!!

sikeston34m 12.05.2007 08:47 PM

Did someone mention my name?

Yes Welcome to the Forums.

Sure, I'll answer any questions that you might have, and yes, I thought that looked familiar.

I tried this setup on the Mamba Max also. It doesn't get along with it at all. I also contacted Castle and asked them if it would work BEFORE I bought the Mamba Max, they also told me that it would work. No Go!

The Quark handles this setup VERY well and even larger outrunner motors than this.

Please check out my "Direct Drive to Diff Revo Conversion" thread here in the Brushless thread. You might find it interesting as well.

Just giving credit where its due!!!:yipi::whistle:

That outrunner is torquey enough to run just 6 cells? or did you just take a pic with only 6 and not 12?

sikeston34m 12.06.2007 06:32 PM

It will run on just 6 cells, but the top speed isn't there.

Much better on 4S Lipo.

Battery

Those are build pics. I did actually try running 18 cells nimh. Amazingly my MM esc didn't blow up and I did get some good top end but it wouldn't start without a push. However, not much torque and I was thermalling within 5-6 min on short grass. It currently has 2 Maxamps 2s 6000 packs and a Quark 80b. I only wish we didn't have this snow so I could do some speed testing. I'll be adding some updated pics tonight.

Cool. It would be nice to see some proper feedback about how well this setup actually works. Not that I dont trust Sike, but its always interesting to see other peoples experiences.

I'm with you on that one Neil.

We need some feedback, some unbiased feedback. Pro's and Con's. What's good about it? What's bad about it? The whole nine yards.

Your feelings on runtimes and temps. Anything that you want to say.

The MM doesn't know how to handle this setup. All I got was stutter, stutter, Cog, thermal shutdown...........

The Quark on the other hand, with those Lipo's.

I would like to hear what you think when the weather gets good enough for you to try it with the new setup.

New pics

I've added the latest pics of the E-Maxx. Not that its really all that different, it just works now. Unfortunately more snow tonight, sigh.

In the meantime, I'll be working on my new projects;

That looks good. Waiting on show to melt must be even tougher than waiting for a package to arrive.

Here's where I mounted my ESC.

It's a snug fit back there, but the shock tower and the bumper bracket protects it well.

Does your E maxx weigh much more with the Aluminum upgrades? What tires/wheels are those?

lincpimp 12.07.2007 11:32 AM

Your Maxx needs a bath Sike!

The motor looks so lonely, no rat's nest of wires around it!

are those stock plastic diff housings in all that aluminum?

ilpufxit 12.08.2007 12:42 PM

Yup, its plastic

Very little runtime so far, they're holding together. I know it won't be long before I'm replacing them. Everything else in the driveline is metal.
