Direct drive neu G3R
I am building a G3R for bashing, let me know what you guys think about this idea. I am thinking about mounting a Neu motor with a shaft coming out both ends between the rails on my G3R by putting drive cups on the shafts. I know I can order the motor in this configuration but I am not sure if I can get a KV low enough. I would probably get a 1527 with 8mm shaft. But even with truggy gears and the lowest 625 KV on 6S lipo topspeed is in the 50s. I would like it to be in the mid 40s and use a smaller 1521, I will have to see if neu can make me one with a kv in the lower 500s. If I decide to do this I will use a MMM controler when it comes out. Let me know if this idea is good or not I dont want to get a bunch of custom stuff and have it not turn out. If I dont do this I will wait for the G2 slipperential and use a regular Neu 1515 with the MMM. What do you guys think.

You need more geardown, the Neu motors have too small of a stator and too far between poles to start up in such a vehicle.

If you are going to do it I think you will find more sucess with a outrunner.
Look up Sikstons outrunner direct drive thread around here, he has made some progress with direct drive. I think MetalMan is doing one as well. They should be able to point you in the right direction. |
unless you use the bigger Neus... but that's gonna be expensive... I was able to do direct drive on my E-maxx with my Lehner 2280... but 2WD only.... just burning rubber... I would agree the outrunner would be a better choice...

I think an outrunner will be too big to fit between the chassis rails

Give me the length/diameter of the output shaft to the transmission and I'll try to make a 12 pole outrunner recommendation for you. There are all different lengths, diameters and kv outrunners out there. IMO, anything less than a 12 pole outrunner Direct Drive probably won't work. How heavy is this vehicle? Tire size? Diff ratio? |
I want to see you do it.:yipi: I can't use an outrunner where I live. The dust will eat it up in less than a full run. Go for it!!!:yipi::yipi:

I ran an Inferno GT on road car with a Neu 1512 1900kv motor on 5S lipo and had it rigged direct drive. I was running 5S lipo. I had to be very mild with the trigger to keep the car hooked up. It did over 90 mph, but it was not at all practical. In any case, the biggest issue that I had was the lack of brakes with that "gearing" setup. I really don't have an intimate understanding of the operation of brushless motors, but I think that the gearing had something to do with the brakes, or lack thereof. Just food for thought.

Direct Drive LMT 3080, problem solve... LOL.. that would be sweet!! |
I could put mechanical brakes on it, but given the response I think there are enough potential issues that I will just use a slipperential. Thanks for the opinions guys
