PolyQuest Lithium Polymers

Got a question for you Lithium guru's

wouldn't a 3s (no P) 6000mah polyquest at 15c be a more powerful pack than say a kokam 3200 at 20 "C"??
15C Polyquest 6000mah 11.1V $195.95
New 15C Version
PQ3S-6000 11.1 6000 15C
(90.0A)

I think the math looks like this///
Polyquest

6000mah or 6.0ah times the C rating of 15 would equal a 90 amp supply or discharge rate.

versus the kokam 3200 3s (no P) 20 "C"
3200mah or 3.2ah times the 20 "C" rating would equal a64 amp supply or discharge rate

Right?

Also Polyquest has a new 20 "C" (no P) pack out
here is a shot of it

20C Polyquest 3700mah 11.1V- Allow 3 Weeks Delivery $140.95
New 20C Version
PX3S-3700 11.1V 3700mah 20C
(74.0A)

to see the listings go to www.maxamps.com and then go to the polyquest large selection on the left and then scroll down to find the big mah (no P) 20 "C" packs

What do you guys think???

tonka truck 07.21.2005 04:32 AM

I think you have answered your own question about which pack is better - 6000mah @ 15C vs. 3200 mah @20C

However if you put the kokam's in parallel to be equal with the polyquest (i.e. 3200 x 2 = 6400 (3s2p) ) then you would have a max discharge rate of 128amps.

So the kokam's will not warm up as much, and you will not be pushing the packs as hard.

I have not heard about the quality of polyquest packs, however use 2000 mah kokam's in my electric r/c planes and have not had any problems. I think their car packs would be similar in quality. Which pack really depends on your budget and type of setup.

hope that helps

tonka truck 07.21.2005 06:50 AM

Just thought about it some more.

Both manufacturers have some type of individual cell voltage monitor. However the fma charger can monitor the individual cells of the car pack (3s2p 6400mah) as it charges and adjust or stop the charge to each cell as necessary.

Kokam setup $119 (USD) charger + 299 (USD) battery (3s2p 6400mah)

Vs.

polyquest setup $195 (3s1p) 6000mah + $39 lipo charger

Again depends on how bare or lush your money is out in the backyard!

The only way that you would be able to use any packs with the Kokam charger (BalancePro or Scorpion chargers) is if they are the Scorpion packs or the BalancePro packs.

Polyquest packs are known for quality and for working well in cars. Their connector can be used to balance the pack. One question - $39 lipo charger, where?

Major Azzwoopin 07.21.2005 03:09 PM

I just ordered some Kokam 3200's I ordered two 3S packs and three 2S packs. I plan on running them in a combination of vehicles is why I bought them this way. I have 2 RC18MT's and a mini zilla that I can run the 2S's in individually and an Emaxx that I can run the 2 3S's in. When I do my brushless savage in the next few weeks (mikes gettin me some pieces right now. I can use the FMA Serial and Parallel adapters and combine my packs into a 6S2P config for that.
I will probably get some of the polyquest packs to see how they match up. I'll let you all know if I see a big difference.
For chargers I have a Astro Flight 109, and my new Schulze isl 6-330d V8.06 should also be here today or tomorrow.

Serum 07.21.2005 04:15 PM

I thought that those polyquest 6000 packs, are actually 3P 2000 packs?

MetalMan 07.21.2005 04:38 PM

Nope. Polyquest is one of the few companies that makes cells that large.

Serum 07.21.2005 04:46 PM

Okay, Thanks!

@ Metal man

For the charger priced $39, it is under chargers tab on the maxamps website. It is a 1-4 cell charger with a charge current of 500mah, V cutoff at 4.2v.

@ major azzwoopin, I would check about your idea of 6s with
different voltage packs.

Does anyone know about this? combining different voltage packs 7.4v and 11.1v packs. As I understand it as long as they are all the same capcity in parallel it does not matter about their voltage rating when in series

For instance you can combine a 11.1 v and 7.4v in series to make a 18.5v pack as long as they are each 3200mah?

RC-Monster Mike 07.21.2005 08:42 PM

A 3s pack and a 2s pack in series = a 5s pack. When I run 18.5 volts in my e-maxx, I use a 3s on one side and a 2s on the other side, wired in series through the controller.

Major Azzwoopin 07.21.2005 08:45 PM

I got my schulze today..man it is half the size of the astro 109. Hard to believe they got that much capability and juice in that small chassis.

I get what you are saying, about not using different voltage packs in parallel with each other but think of it this way. I am going to combine 3 2S packs in series to get a single 6S set of battery outputs. I will then connect 2 3S packs together in series to get a single set of 6S outputs. These will then be connected in parallel and I should not have any issues.
I agree that I would be better off getting a 6S2P pack and then some 2S and 3S packs also. But I am looking for a little more flexibility with my packs. I am spending a small fortune anyway, I can't justify the extra bucks for the monster lipo packs that only have one vehicle use. The schulze has a nice feature I will research some more and post about it. It is supposed to charge individual cells or packs to be joined into a larger pack to a level that will be consistant with all of the other cells in the pack. Basicially used for if a cell in a pack fails, to get it prepped to a level to be consistant with the other cells already in the pack. The biggest thing I have to watch out for is a cell or pack that is not able to keep its voltage consistant or discharge rate consistant with the other cells.
Right???
Anyone else tried anything like this??
I am gonna get some IBC 3800 packs for a back up plan anyway.

500mah is not a lot. Your 3200mah Lipo will take approximately 6hours to charge.

tonka truck 07.21.2005 11:16 PM

lucky I haven't got that charger !

Guess it is a cheap charger for starting out.

Hey major, see your point about flexibility, it seems to be the way to from what you have said. Good luck with the lipo projects.

Haven'y used the schulze charger personally, but write of the charger here in OZ have been v. good, espec in relation to lipo's. Don't know about the equalizing feature though.

Major Azzwoopin 07.22.2005 12:06 AM

This information was included with the Schulze charger as a special addendum for "Notes on the Maintenance of LI-PO batteries"

Sweet!!! I was getting ready to type this text from their form in here. But before I did, I googled it and found it.
Here is a link
http://www.schulze-elektronik-gmbh.d...e/gbalan-e.pdf

I suspect that if I were to purchase the 6s2p packs I could possibly gain some performance (maybe) by having the rates (charge and discharge) matched between the individual cell packs that are combined to make the larger pack. But I don't beleive that someone can predict that any 12 cell packs will perform similar over the duration of a batteries life. In other words if a "selected or matched" pack has a similar set of performance criteria or numbers after 3 charge and discharges, there is nothing to say that after 20 or 50 or more cycles that they will still be matched.
I used to Bass Fish competitively and the deep cycle 12volt batteries used to run trolling batteries would vary tremendously even from the same manufacturer production run. I would commonly have 4 12 volt batteries 3 of which were hooked up to a 36 volt trolling motor. I would hammer these batteries 2 or 3 times a week sometimes and then have them maintained by the same 4 bank battery conditioner. They never were separated or charged or discharged apart from this exact configuration. But some batteries would fail in less than a season and some might make it 3.
Does this make any sense related to these also??
Mike, Serum, anyone else have any practical experience or real world stories?

Major Azzwoopin 07.22.2005 12:09 AM

Oh and Serum,
They left out the note bulletin in the schulze charger related to poor solder connections. I suspect that is so they can use it as a better defense for future possible problems. Maybe it is only included with their ESC's.

LOL :P
