HV vs 9L

I am sorry if this has been answered before, but I am new here and have not yet found the answer. I was wondering how much faster the 9L/9920 would be over the HV in an E-Maxx. Exactly how fast do they run. I know things can big time depend on how I have my truck set up. I am looking for generalities. Also if ya'll think there is some thing better let me know. I plan on running mostly 12 cells with the occasional 14 and do not want to spend more than 300. This includes getting a heatsink.

I have not run a brushless setup yet, but everybody here prefers the 9L/9920 combo over the HV. The HV has some issue with overheating even with proper gearing. As far as speeds go, mike is the one to ask

The hvmaxx is nice, if you want a bit more than stock. the 9L/9920 combination is way more powerfull. the hvmaxx is running around 30-35 mph, and the 9L can be geared for mid 40's on 14 cells.

The 9L can take the maxximum available power from your batteries (batteries use to be the limmit in a setup, a setup can't be any stronger than the power the batteries can deliver)

The ghost stories of the sensorless setups cogging badly belongs to the past. Now a days, those sensorless setups run silky smooth, with neglectable cogging.

For 12-14 cells you also could take a lehner XL2800, though this is a bit above your budget (the 9L has got more torque bytheway.)

Considered your budget, and amount of cells you want to use, i would personally take the 9L 9920 over the hvmaxx without a doubt.

You might start giving your finger some lessons in being carefull onthe throttle, because the 9L is able to ruin stock diffs and get your driveshafts twisted. if you want a setup that is milder on your drivetrain, get the hvmaxx, it will result in a less powerfull truck however.

With that 2800, what speed control could I use? If it is the 9920, I could just get the 9L now and the Lehner later.

If your really want to fly and have awesome power. You could step to a 7xl with the 9920. I don't know how fast you want to go. Or what your truck may weigh. My brother runs a 8l on 12 cells on his emmaxx. It is a big difference form hv. It is harder on the drivetrain though like serum said. I had 7xl with 18 cells and i'm pretty sure i was shooting in the 50s.

Well I have two e-maxx's one is mostly stock except rpm stuff and the other is an extended aluminum chassis with cvds etc. I don't know about idlers or diffs because I just got it used from someone. Oddly though, it seems to weigh less than the mostly stock one. I would like to go as fast as possible but like I said, I don't want to spend more than 300 right now you know 310 320 would be fine but not much more. So it sounds like the 9920 would be a good contoller for now and I could upgrade motors later. 80 bucks a motor doesn't seem too bad to me.

I think mike sells the 7xl for 85 i believe. $5 more than the 9l.

They are 90 dollars, and that 7XL works really good on 14 cells! (dafni uses it in his e-revo, and he got rid of his thermal problems (motor got a bit too hot in his opinion.)

on 12 cells my choice would be a 9L

for 14 the 7XL is a very good choice.

I will say that if you get the 5mm shaft. Mike has the best built pinions for them. I have tried different ones and mikes makes theres look wimpy. Either way with the 9l or the 7xl. You will see more power than a hv maxx set up.

Serum spoke my mind almost exactly(seems to be a habit of his!:)). The 9L is awesome for 12-14 cells, while the 7xl is better suited to 14-16 cells. The 7xl will run excellent on 12 cells, too, but 14 is just about perfect for this motor. Either one, along with the 9920 controller, will easily outperform the Novak.
