A123 build question
 

Just a question about building a 2P A123 style pack:
i want to build a 5s2p, so can i just build 2 independant 5s pack, and after that, simply use the output power leads and connect them in parallel using a "Y" harness make with dean plug???

If YES, could i charge this 5s2p pack using this "Y" harness to charge them in same time on my Hyperion 0610i??

Yes Thats is exactly what I'm going to do! Build 2 x 5s1p packs..

And yes you can charge them that way just not charge and balance at the same time.

i have 2 6s1p in my truck and i use a y harness to connect them together. i also charge them through it, and about every 4-5th charge i'll do the packs seperately.

My next question is: which type of balancer can balance A123 pack??
I have an Hyperion 0610i with the integrated balancer, is this thing can balances A123 if i build my A123 pack with Hyperion balancing tap???

Yes I believe it can - I think the 0610i is a123 compatible out of the box.

I'm sending my 5i back to be flashed to take them - I'll use an LBA10 to balance them once they are above 3v...

I'm using a 610I Net charger and have built 2 5S1P a123 pacs. It has a a123 capability out of the box, its in the menu. Print the 2 page manual and read it, not sure its intuitive enough to get everything set right without it.

Once I got the balance taps sorted out, I found there was a right an wrong way to connect pac to the charger - connect the pac while everything is turned off, both power and balance wires. Once everything connected, then turn charger on, setup and charge/balance.

Supposedly, the built in balalncer is the same thging as the lba10 balancer. I know its wired the same way.

usually you have to do this so the balancer will understand what is connected to this.

ik when i balanced my lipos this is what i had to do.

With my LBA10 it is balancer tap then within 10 secs deans - Then setup the charger for charging press connect button on balancer and then press go on charger within another 10 secs...

When I first started using the charger and turned the charger on and then connected, I was getting an error and charger would not allow charging to proceed. Hyperion puts big warning in the "manual" about not balancing while charging - telling you that you do so at your own risk, so I wanted to charge and balance if any way possible.

Just for S&G, I just tried the other way - turned the charger on, connect the power, then balancer wiring. Guess what? Works fine! This did not work for me a week or so ago and I was so puzzled over why, I pulled the tape off the 2nd I a123 pack I built to double check the wiring - even more puzzling, it was correct. When I connected everything with the charger off, everything worked - balanced while charging.

The only thing I can think of is this was before I soldered a male deans on the supplied connector and I was sharing a connector with my Ice charger. I see the manual explicitly says "Always connect the output cable set to the charger first, then battery". See halfway down on 2nd page where it starts with the bold Note: I guess when I was still sharing the output connector with my other charger, I was not doing this. Now that my 601i has its own output connector, it stays plugged in so won't be done in the wrong order.

So, in answer to your question - no, you don't have to plug in then turn the charger on. The one thing you apparently need to do is to connect the output cable to the set to the charger, then the battery, then connect the balance connector. Sorry I freaked you out dude, but your question cleared up the mystery as to why I was getting that error the way I apparently connected mine.

Moral to this story - put a connector on the supplied output cable setas soon as you open the charger, install it immediately so you'll never connect things in the wrong order.
