eRevo maXXed out 3905 style : Brushless rEvo

Got some great ideas during my project from this site so I figured I would post up my revo brushless conversion to help anyone else starting out.

Thanks to everyone who helped along the way via prior posts or comments in mine as well! Much appreciated!!
Items used:
  • New Revo 3.3 Roller, stripped down the stock tranny and well all electronics and the diffs sold on ebay.
  • New Emaxx 3905 (if you couldn't tell from the title) Stripped the tranny, front drive shaft, both diff's, radio box & well that is it really.. the rest will eventually hit ebay if I like the rEvo enough (keeping the servo's for my Rusty though... hehe
  • Picked up 2 New Era battery trays
  • Picked up 8 nuts from the hardware shop, everything else was from my Rustler extra's or the emaxx or revo
  • Picked up two small velcro straps from Wallyworld
  • Hitec HS-985MG servo
  • Pro-Line Aluminum Steering Arms Blue Anodized Revo
  • Stuck in my unused Velineon ESC mounting plate
  • Used 1 old small piece of plastic under the emaxx's receiver box to mount with
  • Did quite a bit of very precise dremel work and drilling and a lot of staring while I figured out the 'next' step.

PART II on next post! The pic doesn't show it but I dropped in the long shaft from my emaxx to drive the front of my erevo (so yes it is 4wd) AND YES IT WAS A PERFECT FIT, STOCK REVO REAR SHAFT WAS USED FOR THE REAR.

Made my ESC tray and mounts for the emaxx water resistant radio box

I got tired of waiting for my 7XL and MM ESC so I dropped in the dual Titan and evx-2 (I had a dud evx-2 though so it often stops for no reason.. a new one is on it's way though :))

I got bored yet again, now waiting for my 5mm pinions for my 7XL and MM esc so I ripped my single VXL motor off my Rustler and installed it on my rEvoLt. Geared 68t spur and 19t pinion.. if someone wanted this setup would be better than two titans any day of the year and geared lower say 17t pinion it will still run same top speed as the stock emaxx setup but just a TON more torque as you will see in the video.

Thanks again guys hope this helps someone else out!!!! I know this is quick so if you have any questions fire away...

Very interesting, I had also thought about doing a revo conversion with the new tranny when the new emaxx came out. I never did bother to check though! Nice setup!

Not bad, 37.5, how hot did everything get?

stum 01.09.2008 11:45 PM

I wouldn't suggest that as a normal setup, maybe on the new 3905 emaxx that is under 10lbs.. but I ran through most of a 3s2p 8k 20c pack and never broke 170, thinking about it the 170 was the ESC, I dont think the motor temped over 160 and lipo was around 100. If I were to do serious off-roading I'd take it down to a 17t pinion.. for mostly road racing the 18t should be ok. That would put you in the 35mph range with tons of torque.. at least compared to a dual titan setup.

I would never run a small single small can, just wondering hot hot she got

Why didnt you put in your dual V set up in? move the batt tray so you can fit 2 in:mdr:

well i was going to use the stock tranny in my conversion, what do you think bout the vxl in that? i run it in my maxx right now and do around 40-45(older model geared pretty high) it is balistic. outruns revo 3.3 and t-maxx 3.3 easy. how bout with a stock tranny though?

stum 01.10.2008 12:04 AM

The bad thing about the design of the new emaxx tranny is that in either vehicle if you have dual motors you are limited to a 3s 5k lipo and I have 8k lipo's. I am not ready to go buy new lipo's to fit the v-twin in. I am hoping for reasonable results w/ the 7XL and MM setup using my 2s2p 6k lipo's. If I didn't already have money tied up in the lipo's you can bet I would be doing the dual velineon setup. After playing with just one, there is no single brushless setup under 550-600 that can compete.

Yeah, id still take the high end set up, or a 12XL or something on 8s, and a plane speedo (but then you have to have mech brakes) That would run nice and cold, and would cost probably less then dual V's and 2 3s packs, or 2 2s packs... Because you can use a pack with 2200 MAH, and it runs longer then a 4s 4400 set up..... but you'd need the stock revo trans in

stum 01.10.2008 12:31 AM

Don't get me wrong, I'll stick w/ the stock 3905 tranny over the stock revo 3.3 tranny any day.. it's brushless ready and as little as you can get. With the design you have a perfectly centered motor so you can have to batteries with even weight distribution. It's a really great setup. By friday I should have my 5mm pinions here and I can drop in my 7XL and MM esc and use the 4s lipo config. If I can run as good as I did w/ the single VXL I have no doubt I'll be in good shape w/ the 7XL on 4s. Getting excited :) I wasn't about to invest in anything more figuring Castle will have their single MMMonster system out or Traxxas will release a high voltage single motor setup of their own. We shall see...

david lamontagn 01.10.2008 12:32 AM

Just a question that i'am asking......Why people swap their revo tranny for the e-maxx one when every body know that the revo tranny is more solid than the maxx one????????:oh:

Just a question like any other:neutral:

I have a feeling that if you stick with the same final speed you will be blown away with the 7xl/mm combo. The vxl looks to be a decent system, and priced very well. The dual vxl setup looks very promising, especially for around $300. I would like to hear more about runtimes and temps though, before I make any more assumptions!

David, the new emaxx tranny is alot better than the old tranny, metal top and idler gear and the lower gear is made of better plastic too. Plus it has the single motor plate option too.

stum 01.10.2008 12:47 AM

The new emaxx (3905) tranny is brushless ready and stronger than the revo tranny.. it's lighter and stock 2nd gear only. With brushless torque and good lipo's you don't need a first gear. Infact the entire drive line is ugpraded to revo spec or better than a revo. The new emaxx diff's are revo spec, but they are upgraded and better than the revo diff's (you can drop these in for upgrades to any revo). I will actually be swapping out the revo diff's as well, not sure if I noted that anywhere.

Your question looking at the stock revo 3.3 vs the stock emaxx 3906 tranny would be a good one.. because you have to upgrade it as well; alum idler 2nd gear mod or gorillamax mod. The nice part about it is you can have dual battery setups with the motors on center.. but I wouldn't change to a 3906 emaxx tranny, I would just mod the revo and use the stock tranny if my choice was 3906 tranny vs revo tranny. That is just me.. some still did that mod as well.

david lamontagn 01.10.2008 12:49 AM

But is this new e-maxx is better than the revo?? That's what i want to know. Because if YES, i'll switch for this new one.
Tis is a single speed or two speed?
And the metal top and idler, this is a good hardened steel?

But, the best of all will be to drop in an 1/8 scale bugg center diff in this stock revo frame. But i think it's not possible, because if it was possible, i'am sure that a guys here would did it.
