L size without overheating
What would be the ideal motor (9l or 10L) choice in the feigao L size for a light E-maxx (under 8lbs with batts) I know evorybody's running 8xl but I prefer to stay with an L cause I like the higher revs and it works better with my set-up. I currently run an 8L and it's ok for about 15 minutes but gets to hot in the 30minutes mains at the track (180 degrees after about 15 minutes)
would I be able to run an L size and keep it in the 160 range! Esc is a bk9918 and is fine! Right know i'm thinking of 10l as I can just gear it higher than my 8l and still reach 35mph for the track. any suggestions |

thanks, but I know really how to adjust my final ratio :O) I really just want to know if somebody is actually using a 9l or 10l without overheating? If it can be run at least 1/2 hour non stop?
thanks guys |
I know Mike uses, or used, a 9L on his racing Gmaxx, so the 10L should still be great and run a touch cooler, especially in a nice light truck like yours.

that's good info thanks Suicideneil!
Do you know if Mike was using 4s lipo? |
I think it has been a long time since mike ran a feigao L in any racing setup.
I know he did back in the day, but that was years ago and he likely stopped using them cuz of the heat issues. Thats the reason we all upgrade eventually to the higher end motors. If the cheap motors ran cool there would be no need for the higher end Neu and Lehner and such. My recommendation would be if you want to run a faster spooling motor than the XL and want it to run cool you should get yourself a higher end motor like a Lehner 1940. The Lehner will run stellar with the 9918 you have. The Feigao L cans will run the Emaxx, but I think you will have a heck of a time getting one to stay cool for 30 minutes of racing while doing it. Hell thats allot to ask for from a Feigao XL motor IMO. I know its allot more expensive than the Feigao, but in order to run cool you need efficiency and the efficient motors come at a price. |
Well, I have had experience with most of the l can motors, and the best combo I have found in an emaxx is a 15l on 5s thru a bk9920. I can get slightly more than 30mins on a 4400 5s lipo. The bk esc does fine and does not really get warm. I have a clip on heatsink on the motor and it says under 150 for the entire time. I do have an RCM heatsink/clamp that I will put on the motor. I am not sure that you will have as much success with 4wd, but it is your best bet with a l can motor. The xl series will stay cooler, but I just purchased a hacker 15l, and I feel that the better quality will help with temps and effeceintcy, which is the main issue with feigao motors.
A 9l on 4s will run hot. A 10l will be better but not much. An 11l will be the best bet on 4s, but I am not sure the temps will be what you are looking for. A hacker eqivalent may possibly do what you want. |
thanks lincpimp,
Was your E-maxx mostly stock weight. Considering my E-maxx is pretty light I think I might be able to get away with L motor! Especially if you say you got yours running warm on a 15L, your giving me some hope! Maybe I should try a 12L ! but one question is am I going to losse to much power? 8l on 4s is to hot but gives 1140watts (14.8 x 77) 12L would give 750watts (14.8 x 51) If geared for same speed then I would loose a lot of power with the 12L right? |
The only way to retain the power and lower the temps is to go with an xl motor, or a more effecient motor. The 8l is getting hot from spinning too fast. A 10l would be better as it spins less than 40k rpm. Akk I can say is to go it a try. Ohterwise go to a hacker motor, a 10l from them should produce as much power as the 8l feigao and run cooler too.
My emaxx was completely stock save for the removal of the front diff and driveshafts, and a set of cvds in the rear. It has the gmaxx single speed too. |
