Bl Mt-2 Ss
I will be getting a HPI MT-2 SS soon and I'll be making it a BL beast. I'm pretty sure I'll sell the nitro junk on eBay or something like that to raise the money to get a BL system. My question is, what motor should I get? I was thinking a Lehner 5300, but I'm not sure it would have the torque to do the job on six cells.

I personally would get a 4200 with 8-10 cells GP2200's. (or lipoly)

I'd also go with the 4200, it'll handle the load better and produce enough power on 6-8 cells. With gp 3700's it already feels like 7 cells to me.

How many cells would you run Daniel? If you want sheer power, you could run 12 cells on a Feigao 8L. I realize that this may be overkill, but it would allow for MASSIVE power and speed. The MT2 18SS has a beefed up drivetrain over the MT2 that could probably handle the power.
If you want LONG runtimes on GP3300s, you can go with a Feigao 12s. It will go almost as fast as the 8L, but with much better runtimes (the 12s is what I run in my Rustler on 3s or 4s Lipo). |
an 8L on 12 cells is really insane have you seen the weight of that truck metalman? (under 5lbs...)
10 cells is more than enough allready.. 12 on the 8L would make it fly.. (which is good... ;) ) |
I use the 8L in my 1/8 buggy on 3s Lipo. Great power. The temps stay good too. On 4s, the motor gets hot, and the controller does too. I can just imagine a truck as lightweight as the MT2 being pushed by an 8L!

Well, I'd like to keep it at 6 cells just because after I buy a BL system, I won't be able to afford new batts for quite a while. I think I'll try my brother's 5300/warrior setup and see how it does with that. I'm thinking the 4200 will be about right as it says it has about the same power as a 12T brushed, so that should be a good mix of torque and speed for my application (track hacking and launching it).

On 6-7 cells i would pick the 5300 and if you want a bit more runtime, get the 4200.. Nice to have a brother who enjoys the same hobby.. I have only got sisters... (who are not interested in technique anyway... ;) )

I've got a sister too, but her rusty's been sitting in the same spot for a couple months now :(. I think I might have to go with the 5300 on this one. Now here's another question, BK or MGM? I don't have a ton of money, so I'm leaning towards the MGM. Once I get the truck, I think I'll run a 10x2/super rooster combo just to hold me over until I can buy a BL.

Well it all depends on driving style, if you use brakes or like to back off on throttle and not coast, then you need to go with the Lehner.

Well, I will be using a y-harness and reverse lock-out so that I can have brakes to make the motor last as long as I can and to keep the temps down. I'm used to brushed and it having a drag brake when you release the throttle and I kinda like that. I think a Fiego 8s/MGM system will be good for me (and my wallet!).

The newer MGM controller have a programming feature to allow "freewheeel" when reducing the throttle. This effect can now be turned on or off. I would go with the MGM controller for the lower cell count applications.
The new MGMs arrive today, and all have a new design with heat sinks and top mounted motor and battery wires(much easier to mount an a car/truck, and capable of harder running with the heatsinks). |
I have used an MGM 12012 and Lehner basic xl4200 in both a XXX-T MF and now my Jato conversion. In both applications on 6-cell 3300/3600 packs and 2s lipo, the combination easily out-performed a 12-turn brushed motor.
My buddy (who owns the local shop and tracks) runs an Orion Revolution 11-turn in his MF2 and BK2. He has told me that my brushless combo in both applications has excessively more power than his 11-turn. Regardless of what you see on paper and in formulas, there's no replacing real-life experience. I'm very pleased with my xl4200 / MGM 12012 combo. The only thing I will be changing is to switch to a new MGM 80 amp controller when they are released. I will use the 12012 in my buggy conversion again. camel_rc - The first gen MGM (the ones I have, at least) do not have a programming option for reverse lockout. However, the controller will not move into reverse without going neutral first. This means that you can go from throttle to brake without reversing. I am using it this way, with the y-harness, in my MGT and Jato. If you let the controller sit in neutral while coasting, then push for brake, the motor will spin in reverse if your vehicle has a one-way in the transmission. |
