so this was the old "why are buggies popular" thread and i edited it to my xb8 conversion thread!!

that way i dont have too many threads...

i figured it was an OK deal since it looks pretty new and it retails for around 550-650.

all i need to buy for it is an esc and motor and motor mount because i have a 4s evo 25 battery and rcms battery tray....


so i was thinking.....

mm esc with a
plettenberg or neu or feigao or something...
and a cc bec

how does that sound?


im not sure what type of speeds im looking for but this will be my race buggy.... so im guessing like 35-40? some good acceleration is a must.


if i get a feigao i can basically buy it right now... if i get a neu or some other expensive motor it may take a while.

im still saving for that lcd tv and this didnt help me out much:lol:

im selling off my paintball gear so after i get rid of that ill have enough to buy the lcd and will have some extra money left over for this project.

I always enjoyed racing my RC10B more than my 10T (Waaaaaaaaaaay back in the 80's and early 90's:gasp:) as the buggy was more of a challenge to drive and for me, more enjoyable.

As I prepare to enter the 1/8 electric arena, I chose a buggy for the same reason.

Buggies are faster aren't they. Buggies are faster and more agile around the track then truggies I thought.

A truggy drives its self compared to a buggy.... Which for me is alot more fun

an when u say agile u mean they ca go thugh corners faster and stop quicker and all that?

I dunno about that. Sure, truggy center/front/rear diff ratios are larger (which makes them slower), but the tires are larger in diameter, so it kinda evens out the final rollout ratio I would think. Truggies do tend to weigh a little more though, but that's nothing a larger motor won't be able to overcome. :smile:

Personally, I suspect Truggies evolved from lazy buggy makers. After all, why not simply use the solid, time-tested platform of a buggy and make some adjustments to make it closer to a MT? Ok, maybe it's not laziness per se, but rather a "if it aint broke, don't fix it" type of mentality. :neutral:

Buggies feel lighter and more agile than a truck/truggy in general. Both 1/10 and 1/8 trucks... are great too, but they have a more lazy feel and are usually "easier" to drive... more forgiving because of the larger tires and extra weight.

Buggies require a little more skill to be fast imo which is why imo they have always been the bigger race class.

Having said that... any 1/8 car is "easy" to drive compared to 1/10. (Or you might say that's 4wd vs. 2wd)

Buggies are the F1 of off road. They are the toughest in terms of damage (shorter arms catch less and less leverage on bad landings and impact), more agile, less weight, less rotational mass (meaning less worn drivetrain), faster spool up, more people in mains means more competition. We race for the challenge, both the thrill of the drive and the competiton of other good drivers. Truggy is growing but it hasn't been around as long as buggy. Truggy seems to be the transition for the monster truck guys to step up, and a second class for buggy guys so it's mixed.

Monster trucks just break, big heavy and tons of rotational mass. And it's becoming more of a liesure class, and newbies often start there, then move on to buggy or or more likely truggy.

1/10 around here is starting to come back, but only electrics. I think I saw 2 or 3 gt's all year last year. We are promoting 1/10 electric bigtime right now and it's making a big come back, but again, we have monster truck/novice (emaxx, pede's, rustlers, a brushless revo.... just about anything goes), 1/10 stadium and 4wd mod...

I race a brushless 1/8 buggy, nitro 1/8 buggy and a brushless 4wd 1/10. Why, because they are similar, super fast, and I get to race against some of the fastest guys around here that if I can ever beat, then I know I am on my game.... wish I had more game though as I usually get it handed to me. I was happy being 3rd of 12, and might have ended 4th if one guy didn't smoke his esc lol

I agree with everything said so far and will throw in one more reason... They are pretty much the do anything vehicle.

They are excellent track vehicles and are usually the fastest class, they can be great bashers cuz they are tough as nails and really take punishment like nothing else, they can run off road in the dirt, in the grass, jump well, are fast, handle well all around, can be set up to run well on the street and parking lots as well with very little effort. Just about the only thing they dont excel at is the really heavy off road rough terrain that only a monster truck will deal with.

In a nutshell they are very versatile and if you are looking for a second vehicle and already have a truck I would recommend one.

If you're talking about 1/8th scale then I tend to agree but as far as 1/10th scale I differ. Most 1/10th scale electric vehicles are made of very lightweight but fragile material IMO. I am much happier with nitro conversions than I am with brittle Production made 1/10th vehicles.

My standard platform for 1/10th scale buggies and trucks is now the HB Lightning 10 series. They weigh over a pound more than the production counterparts but I assure you that they are less likely to fail/break.

It will always come down to who's driving but with all things equal, the buggy is the fastest vehicle on the track. I tend to like truggies more because they are more forgiving for average folk drivers like me yet still feel like a buggy :lol:

Yes 1/8 buggies are what I was talking about.

I gave up on 1/10 as soon as I was able to power a 1/8 with electric a couple years ago. Way to fragile for me too.

Nice pick up. Once I get the electric savage built and finished (it's taking forever). I am going to buy a buggy they look like fun (maybe i'll get a chopper first). The electronics you mentioned would be the setup I would run. Feigao if I didn't have the money for the Neu (which I don't).
