Testing big motor on mamba?
I have a 1500w BMC brushless motor coming on thursday and don't have a controller to run it yet. I want to just test the motor out to make sure it rotates and doesn't have a blown coil or anything, since I bought from someone who claimed it was new. So can I use my mamba max at 16.5v to just try and get the motor to spin. It seems it would be fine but just don't want to blow it or anything. Oh here is a picture of the motor for fun:

MM should take the voltage fine (may have to turn off the LVC in the newest style MM), I think the load would be the question. So long as the motor isn't hooked to anything I would think it would be fine. Is that an in-runner or an outrunner?

It is an inrunner.
It should be fine, just start the motor up slowly and don't put a load on it. Before doing so check the leads for continuity and dead shorts to the case. |
It is built for electric vehicles. I plan on putting it on a electric off road mountain bike eventually. When I say 1500w, it is supposed to be able to provide a continuous output of 1500w with a far higher output peak. Size comparison is that shaft is 7/8th inch. I plan on eventually pairing it with a Kelly programmable Brushless 200 amp controller and running it at 66v. Should be a lot of fun.
I don't plan on testing it on any load. Guess I will just try it out thursday. I will post the result maybe some more pics. THanks for the help. |
electric mountain bike does sound deliciously fun.

When you get that motor take a picture with something else in the frame so we can get scale. It really doesn't look that big.

lol i think it looks enormous, that shaft is nearly and inch thick. (I take it that 7/8" measurement is diameter not length?)

yah 7/8in is the diameter. I'll get some photos with something to scale it to on Friday. Thanks guys

that motor's huge, you can see the shaft is cut for a shear key. Looks like a 1/4 inch key will fit

You should take a pic of it next to a feigao xl, and put a big read arrow pointing to the xl with a caption. Something like "look carefully and you can see the xl motor hiding in the shadows..."

Pulling a Xl motor off would be a nightmare but I put a quarter in there for you.
So I finally got around to taking some photos of the motor this last weekend. This motor is really awesome. Huge 10 gauge wire running inside along with hall sensors and what looks to be a thermo sensor inside too. The full finned unit weighs in at 10.4 lbs, so it not exactly light weight. I also got a chance to run the motor on the mamba max and it works great. It seems to have a lot more poles or something because I couldn’t get it to cog. The peak current I saw at 16 or so volts input was about 10 amps. lol, that IS big! Any more specs on it? You mention it's a 1500w motor, and plan to run 66v on it, but what is the KV, max amp load, max rpm, etc? Am looking to do a similar project and am looking at options. Where'd you get it?
