I was planning an HV controller with one of their slower motors (I think the 8.5) so I could still use my 3s packs, and have the sensored smoothness.

I haven't done it yet (time and budget) but others have. Electric Thunder over on RCZone did it with 12 cells I believe.
Edit: spelling
Yup, 12 GP3300s on my SS5800 (ESC didn't even get warm). That thing SCREAMED in my Rustler. But it did get quite hot (didn't temp it, but it was probably a good 170 after two or three passes out in front of the house). It was also pulling some neat wheelies. Keep in mind this was with a stock rotor (I think, or the velociti rotor; been a while since I cracked that motor open). With a sintered rotor, you'd probably fair MUCH better.

In fact, up until recently, I was running my TT-01 with the SS5800 motor + velociti rotor on the HV ESC. Ran flawlessly; smooth as butter. The ESC was errrr... a tight fit though.;)
