I had to cut those wires on the first XL motor I got. One of the wires was so frayed (and tinned) that there was no way to get a connector on it. After trying to get the wires to come together, one of the frays broke off. I figured it would be bad to just put the connector on like that, so I cut 1/4" off. Also figured I should keep all wires the same and cut 1/4" off of each. I just heated them up with a good hot soldering iron and flowed solder until it ran off and took all the burnt coating crap with it.
