IMO, it's best to use a plastic spur whenever possible. If the design doesn't allow it, then use a hardened pinion. I'm still using the same hardened pinion on steel spur in my Hyper 8 for many runs now and the pinion still looks fine.

If the Kyosho spur leaks, add a gasket and that will take care of it. You might also have some dirt or something that is preventing a perfect seal. Of course, you may need to add/remove shims to adjust the internal mesh because of the thickness of the gasket.
